Toshiba Satellite a205 Battery Will Not Charge

I have a computer that is about 8 mos old. Suddenly the battery will not charge when the computer is on, and even though it is plugged in the battery still runs down.

I let the battery drain and turned the computer off, afterwards I could charge the battery completely. I used it, plugged in, for a few days and then my wife used it with just the battery for a few hours. Now that the battery was no longer fully charged, the same problem happened all over again.

When the battery ran down, I took it out so the computer was only running on the charger. It shut down after five minutes and will now not run on the charger either, nor will it charge the battery even when the computer is turned off.

Is this a problem with the charge cable or could it be something more serious?

Okay thanks, I will keep that in mind for the future. But what about the original battery charging problem as the battery was not charging and the computer would not run at all even though it was plugged in. I have had other laptops where they battery has been shot and I could still run it?

A short status update. I have the computer off right now and the charging light is on. This was happening early but the light would go off after about five minutes. Right now it has been charging for about twenty minutes.

No, I'm sorry. I wasn't clear. The battery is back inside the computer. It is charging right now, but I haven't tried turning the computer on yet.

The problem was that the battery wasn't charging up normally when the machine was plugged in. It would run down and wouldn't just run the computer from the charger, and then the computer would shut off. This time, however, I couldn't charge the battery even when the machine was off.

Okay, then I haven't busted a fuze. The battery is now registered as being fully charged. Hopefully the computer will run this way, plugged in, until I have time to take it to the shop for maintenance to see why they battery will not charge when it drops below 100%.

I read elsewhere that this might be a motherboard problem, although I hope that that is not the case.

Thanks very much for your advice.

You did what all should not have been done. your battery works as a buffer between high surge of electricity which comes through electrical supply i.e. it protects your smps from burning up. From your current position it seems your smps fuse has blown. If they have given one or else your smps itself has gone. I'll tell you for your future usage of battery. Whenever you get any electronic equipment with chargable battery you should never switch it on unless and untill you have charged it for continuous 24 hours. Never try to run such equipment directly through dc or ac power. Hope your fuse has gone its not costly.

Thats a run and hit version of troubleshooting which may even damage your smps completely. Thats upto you if you can risk your smps you can continue with hit and run method or else just change the fuze of the smps and put the battery inside cabinet and let it charge for min 8 hrs.

Batteries get charged only when the circuit is complete if a fuze is broken then the circuit won't complete and it won't charge

Toshiba A205-S5809 Wont power on

Try another cord/charger with the EXACT same power specs. If you have a multimeter, verify DC voltage at the AC jack plug. If the AC jack, in the laptop, has been pulled, damaged, it's may have a loose connection. You didn' say if ANY LED's, battery charge, work? If the battery is charged and it doesn't start on battery only, then you have other issues. It may need a ride to a Qualified Computer Tech.

My battery charges but only lasts about 20 minutes once it says it is fully charged. Just purchsed a new battery thinking it was old (laptop is about 3 years old) and the same thing happens.

From what you describe and assuming the new battery was "new", I'd say you have an internal short which is draining the battery over a short period of time. I'd also investigate the accuracy of the battery charge indicator. Download this free utility which will give you a more accurate picture of your battery:
http://www.mioplanet.com/products/batterymeter/

I'm assuming you gave the battery a "commissioning charge" when you bought and used it?
If not, this is something you should do with all new LI batteries. This bit is reproduced from a website that sells batteries for the Toshiba satellite series:

"2. The new Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack needs to be circled (fully discharged and recharged) three to five times to reach its optimum performance.
3. Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery will undergo self-discharging when left unused for a long period of time. Thus, it should always be stored in a fully charged state and kept in a cool, dry and clean place.
4. It is normal if the new Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery gets warm when being charged or used. However, please pay special attention if the battery pack becomes excessively hot. This may indicate there is a problem with the charging circuit of the electronic device. Please consult a qualified technician if necessary.
5. To maintain the optimum performance of Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack, it is highly recommended to circle (fully discharging and recharging) it at least once a month.
6. New batteries are hard to be charged. Sometimes, your electronic device may indicate a fully charged condition about 10 to 15 minutes when Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack is being charged for the first time. When this happens, remove the battery pack and let it cool down for about 10 to 15 minutes then repeat the charging procedure. Sometimes, the new Satellite a205-s4777 battery will suddenly refuse to be charged. If this happens, a suggested solution is trying to remove the battery from the device and insert it again. "

When I turn my computer on, the screen flickers and then goes black.

1. Check you batteries to see if it is fully charged.
2. Then check the power adapter to see if you are getting a charge to the battery.
3. It sounds like the battery is not charge or has a dead cell in it.

Toshiba Satellite a205 the battery light started

I think you may need a new power supply, check this to make sure it is working OK, If this isn't working then the battery will not charge, and give symptoms you describe.

When i plug in my toshibba satellite a205, the plug light turns on, but the batery charge lights flashes just once, then goes off. my battery says 2%, not charging. is it a battery or combination laptop...

True turning it on while pluged in but without the battery in. If it works its your battery if not it is you charger or laptop, my bet is on the charger they have a tendancy to go out.

Suddenly my Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop died. No power.

First, check your power supply (the adapter). Is it putting out the required voltage to charge the battery?
If not, then you might have a dead battery and no way to charge it.
If the power supply is working and when you turn on the computer you get no lights, then you're probably looking at a new motherboard.
If you get startup lights and hear the fan, then it's getting power and you might have a video problem. But it sounds like, from what you wrote, there is no activity at all when you try to start it. That would be the power circuit on the motherboard, most likely.

Battery not charging...

My impression is that you might have a defective cord if you still have your old adapter and has the same power specification try this first.

If the battery is hot and does not charge you might have a defective battery . Better have it checked at the service center before buying a brand new battery
