Question about Dell Vostro 1710 Laptop

Can not insert CD into Drive

My Dell Vostro 1710 laptop has a slot in CD drive meaning there is no tray. I can not insert any CD's in to the laptop. There is no CD inside the laptop either and no CD tray meaning I can not fix this by poking a paperclip through the hole. What can I do?

You can flip the laptop over, find the screw(s) holding the drive in the bay, remove the screws and the drive, and then either attempt repairing the drive (highly likely not to be worth the time), or breaking down and buying a replacement that does have a tray. Old laptop parts can be quite expensive, but CD-ROM drives in laptops old and new are often quite widely compatible among many makes and models.

I did some testing on a CD/DVD drive of the same design as the drive in your laptop. As explained in another answer to your question here, it could be that the lens inside the drive is very dirty and needs to be cleaned. Should you choose to try this, I have had the best results from General Electric optical disc cleaners. Assuming your drive is not physically inoperable, then I strongly suspect you are experiencing an insufficient supply of power to the drive, which can be fixed by re-seating the drive firmly to ensure a solid connection between the gold contacts one the drive and in the bay. If it is a power shortage issue but re-seating the drive in the bay is not the problem, either the drive has failed or another piece of hardware between the drive bay and the laptop's internal power supply has failed or is failing.

SOURCE: my dell d610 laptop cd/dvd drive not working

the drive has one lens, that works for both cd's and dvd's. when it reads a dvd it uses a higher light frequency, however when reading a cd it will use a lower light frequency. the lens is most likely dirty, which is why the high frequency light aka dvd is working but not the low frequency light aka cd. a specialized lens cleaning cd may be needed. or if you want to do it manually open the drive exposing the lens, then get a q-tip and some rubbing alchohol. dip the q-tip in the rubbing alchohol and rub the lens gently in a circlular motion. then turn the q-tip over to the dry side and do the same to dry it. thank you for using fixya!

SOURCE: my dell vostro 1710 laptop computer screen is black.

First, try reseating the memory modules in the laptop.

If still nothing, try removing the hard drive, CD/DVD Drive, and memory one at a time (in that order) see if anything makes it boot.

Replace the parts and try booting again.

The error flashing means a processor failure. If you are knowledgeable you can try re-seating the processor.

However, if your unit is in warranty I would call Dell and have them replace the main board and the memory modules as a set. Warning: They will make you go thru these same tests even if you already have.

SOURCE: Hi, I have a Dell

Take a paper clip and straighten it. Easy goes - insert it in the small hole in the tray, just a little at a time. When you start to feel resistance, gently push a tiny bit more, and the tray will open. But do remember - be careful, don't just jam it in or you may damage your DVD as well as your tray. Sounds like you may need to have a new drive installed.

Forgot my hdd password for dell vostro 1710 laptop

It probably would be easier to reformat the hard drive and start with fresh install of windows to get around this problem, only other option is go to www.ebay.com type laptop and password, and narrow it down to hdd password. There are sellers that offer software to deal with this problem, but the disc is only good so long as you can set the boot order first for the cd/dvd driver and the software must match your operational system.

CD ROM is in the 1710 but system does not recognise disk and now will not eject. I have tried from the BIOS screen but no luck....

First get the cd out. On the side where the cd tray is there should be a little pin hole. Stick a pin in gently and that should release the cd tray and eject the cd. Then try updateing your cd rom drivers, uninstall and reinstall....
