Question about Measuring Tools & Sensors

Open Question

How can I check if my Dare electric fence tester #3360 is working.

My Dare Electric Fence Tester was working one day and then not the next day. Can't be sure if it is the fence charger or the tester or both that are not functioning properly.

SOURCE: Controller has no voltage output when connected to fence

You have a dead short to ground somewhere along the fence circuit.Disconnect the leads again, and use a resistance checker to check resistance to ground.(Push a metal rod into the ground to connect one of your leads to,and connect the other lead to the fence.)One or the other fence circuit ends will have a lower resistance to ground. That fence end is closer to the short to ground.Follow that part of the circuit until the resistance to ground is as close to zero as you can find.(taking the ground rod with you as you go)Somewhere in that area you will find your short.

You can teat the battery with this, but you need a volt meter to test the charging system. Your battery should have about 13.5 volts when the ehicle is running.

I have a 9month old battery from halfords (4 yr gaurantee) that i use for electric fence in my field . recently it takes recharg for a few minutes and charger say fully charge .charger work ok

You could try for a replacement. Halford will honour their word. I wouldn't mention the electric fence as if it has been left to go flat, it will be damaged.

Got a electric fence it said it 10 watts how many volts is the fence had some one say it would kill my grandkid if he touch it he is five

I regularly used to encounter the sort of electrified fencing designed to discourage animals when I was a young kid. We used to dare each other to touch them and laughed as the victim violently reacted. In those days the power unit was just a car ignition system powered by a car battery and triggered by an electric clock mechanism sending pulses of high voltage along the wire at one or two second intervals.. These days I think the unit produces the same effect but uses electronics and consumes less current.

Farmers used to impress us kids by grabbing the wire and holding on without reacting. My aunt had an ancient hand-cranked machine that produced a similar voltage. It had two electrodes intended to be held in the hands of anyone suffering with rheumatism.

I can't tell you the voltage but I guess it is likely to be at least several thousands but of short duration and at a low current so it is unlikely to do your grandson any harm unless he has some fairly severe medical problems. If he is healthy your fence is just likely to add to his education.

How long does it take to charge battery in solar fence charger?

    1. A solar powered electric fence energizer usually contains a battery for energy storage. The solar panel collects the energy from the sun and charges the battery. Lead acid batteries, which are used in solar fence chargers, typically last around 3 years, or around 1,000 days of charging.

I have a Parmak Model DF-SP-LI. With a volt meter it reads 2.3 on the fence, but the performance meter is always reading beyond the green.

It depends on the type of fence tester. the common light-o-meters are a resistor ladder, calculated not only for voltage but current. the DF-SP-LI uses half the lowest current most are designed for. no if that is a digital or analog meter, then it would be time to check the out put from the charger with out the fencer connected. if you get the same reading it maybe defective unit. if you get a better reading then you will probable need to upgrade your ground system. insuffencient ground will show its self as a low out put on the fence but not on the charger.

Why do my horses keep going through the fence in the winter? We have the 12v solar unit! It seems as though there is a delay with the shock!

Trim your horses whiskers (on the muzzle) and they won't be able to tell if the wire is hot or not. Horses test electric fencing with whiskers. I would suspect because days are shorter and more cloud cover your charger is not producing enough power.

I have just set up a new mains powered electric fence and i need to install a cut out switch but i wired it in the way i was told and the system dont work. what am i doin wrong

Where are you checking the power at? The transformer? Or the fence wire itself? The power to the transformer is basic 110 volt, 15 or 20 amp circuit, need to be in a pipe or somewhat protected, , like through a wall. The transfomrer should be accessible, and can be switched by a light switch in a box. Your fence wire has to be a continuous run, no breaks, and make a complete circuit. It comes in different voltages, And will blow out a tester in a flash if it is on the wrong setting, so start with the high voltage and work your way down when testing. Some are just a tickle, some will knock you on your ****. So be careful. Make sure the breaker is on and good, and the plug is good if it has one. Also, it should hum or buzz when running. The horse will only have to touch it one time and he will never go near it again. Hope this helps.
