Question about ViewSonic VP201s 20.1" LCD Monitor

Viewsonic VP201b, power light but no menu or picture

I believe the fuse on the backlight blew out, but one recommendation was to replace the fuse, I only see one fuse and it's on the main power board, is there another one just for the backlight? If so, I don't see it, can someone provide me with more specifics on where this fuse is located?

Excellent, I do recall seeing two of these near the input power of the backlight board. It's sad to say, I've done through-hole circuit boards for Rockwell Collins and I can't recall ever seeing them use fuses. Thanks.

PS. More like half to a quarter size grain of rice with a tiny-tiny little window, like I can really tell if their is a wire still attached in there.

    Great reminder on the F# = fuse, C# = cap, R# = resistor, etc...

Hello,

The fuse on the inverter is very small usually small that a grain of rice. It will be labeled F something such as F101 F205 etc. The other thing to look for is blown capacitors, they are anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter and 1/2 to 1 inch in height. When they blown the top that is normally fat will either have a domed top or the top will be fully popped open. If you see anything that looks like that then they will need to be replaced before you replace the fuse or it will just blow again. The values on the capacitors are marked on the plastic sleeve that is around them. You may be able get them from Radio Shack but most likely you will have to order them to get the right values. If you have additional questions just email me. I am in the process of posting some pictures of bad capacitors on my web site at www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.html

Yes, very small but most of the newer surface mount fuses don't have the small window, they look just like surface mount caps and resisters. Usually the value for an inverter fuse is 4 amps.

My only question here is: what is the voltage for that 4A fuse? 24V, 32V, 50V ?
I've "shorted" the fuse with one strand of 30 gage wire (rated for 1A - just wanted to see if it worked - it did). I'll replace that with the real deal if I can find the right voltage. I wouldn't give this monitor to anyone without a real fuse.

ViewSonic VP201b with Black screen. I think the problem is the back light power supply. If I shine a light on it at an angle I can see the image on the screen. what is the part number to get a replac

Hello,

The power supply board is model L20C-2 In most cases you can repair the board cheaper than you can purchase a new one. The problem is the filter capacitors go out and this keeps the back light bulbs from powering up right. If you feel like doing the repair on the board here is a link that shows the board with the bad parts circled and a parts list on the capacitors that needs to be replaced.

Hi, I have a ViewSonic VP201b monitor that has a problem.... It seems that it wont turn on (BLACK SCREEN *NOTHING*). The yellow light goes on when idle, but when it's not idle the green light isn't...

Get a working monitor and turn on the computer. Then swap the monitor with VP201b.

Get a flash light closer to the screen to see whether you can see the desktop screen image. Yes? Then it is your backlight inverter.

Find a Youtube video to show you how to open the cover. Then look for any sign of broken capacitor(s). Replace them and then test your monitor. If all capacitors are okay, it is one of your FUSES. There are 2 tiny surface mount fuses ("FN" type). You can short the two ends to test it before removing them. Often only one of them is broken. Replace it and the monitor shall be okay now.

ViewSonic VP201b with a black screen

hramirez, Retevo. com says time to retire this old monitor. Its that or you will need to do some extensive reading here on fixya on how and what to look for inside the unit that could be causing your black screen condition!!! Then you will go to YOUTUBE and view some of the many video clips that deal with "lcd monitor repair" and lcd monitor disassembly". Have you noticed any bad, swollen top, elcetrolytic filter capacitors on the units "switch-mode-power-supply/CCFL inverter printed circuit board?? How about any "cold" frosty looking solder joints around the component leads of the power transistors and ferrite inverter transformers? May need to get large magnifying glass to find those pesky little cold solder joints. 12fixlouie

Vp201b wont turn on

Checkto see if you do have 12vdc output from the power supply module as shown in my pictures: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Viewsonic%20VP201B/

Look for bad caps (leaking/bulging tops).

Viewsonic VP2130B no Video

First off, on these monitors, usually the power board is also the inverter board. If its not on this model monitor, and you know that by opening it up and seeing the backlight cables connected to a different board, than that may be the problem, but it might not be.

Secondly, Why did you replace the power supply? Were you not getting anything? power light? anything at all?

If you were getting the power light, but no picture (black screen), something else was most likely the problem.

Your problem is probably the backlight. It sounds like its out. Does the backlight come on at all? If it doesn't and you can faintly see an image if you look closely or if you press the menu buttons and see a faint change in the screen, thats the problem. Normally I would say its either the power board OR the backlight, but you say you replaced the power board. You need to replace your backlight. You can do that a couple different ways:

1) Replace the whole LCD panel. This is a costly fix, so if you are adventurous and cheap like me I would advise against it.

2) Replace the backlight panel. You need a screen like yours that is broken, but has a good backlight. That way you get it cheap, because its broken and beyond taking everything apart and putting it back together again, its relatively simply.

3) Fix the backlight you have. There are tutorials on how to do this online, but its harder and more dangerous (mercury and toxins that can cause lots of damage). I wouldn't do this, but if you want to I would suggest doing it in a place with lots of ventilation.

There could possibly be a problem with your mainboard, especially if you see no image AT ALL and you don't see a backlight. If your power board/inverter and backlight are fine, you should see the backlight on, regardless of the condition of the mainboard. If you see the backlight, then the mainboard is the problem. If your power board failed, and the power light wasn't coming on before, its possible that the board fried your mainboard and potentially your backlight (although damaging your backlight is rather unlikely).

In any case, good luck to you!
