Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Molding inside door on freezer is very warm to the touch. Almost hot. Model TFX27EKC (21 YRS OLD) Freezer side seems to be working, but systme check on door, gives code FF. Refrigerator seems to be working, and freezer does too, except for the molding on the inside of freezer side is very warm. Is there a relay for a defrost coil that maybe stuck closed, causing the defrost coil to be turned on all the time?

Hi WR,

Your symptoms scream "failed condenser fan motor!". This old unit is definitely worth the repair (one of the last of the great GE's). Here's the thing, the fan motor for your fridge calls for a #WR60X187 and this one runs about $110.00! There IS another option... part #WX4X988 (and this one costs about $40.00). They are BOTH manufactured by GE and they BOTH have the same RPM. The only difference between the 2 motors is how they hook up electrically.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO REPAIR... UNPLUG YOUR FRIDGE FIRST!

Take a look at this link. This is the motor that is a direct replacement. You'll see 2 thumbnail images... look at the second one. See that black thing at the top? That's the electric connection.

Now look at this link. This is the SAME motor, but with different wiring. All you have to do to install this one is to cut the plastic connector from your original wire harness, strip the wires and wire nut it to the new motor.

By the way, I failed to mention where the motor is located. Clean off all the stuff from on top of the fridge, then roll it out into the kitchen. Now get behind it and remove that cardboard cover there at the bottom. I think your condenser fan motor is on the left side. (hint---> it's the thing with the 6" fan blade mounted to it). When you get to this point, you'll see that the fan is either not spinning or is spinning slowly... either way, ya gotta replace it.

There are only 3 screws mounting the motor to the bracket. Remove those and pull the motor. Remove the fan blade from the old motor and put it on the new one. Then just mount the new motor to the bracket and button everything back up!

(TIP! ---> While you're doing this repair, you should take this opportunity to vacuum all the dust outta the compartment back there.)

If you have any questions just write back.

Insulation does not melt - gaskets may be affected by hot temps.

Your condenser coils may be located on sides of fridge. If so the unit will be warm to the touch on the outside.

The heat in door frame is normal but undetectable when ref at normal temp. Definitely cooling problem. Google ref not cold enough to get help to solve problem. Never use any oil for it will not help also health problem if not approved to be used around food. Fan motor must be replaced for it will just keep stopping.

This will get warm. If very hot check and clean coils in front, underneath. Also check fan behind rear panel. It should be turning when the unit is running. Also check for door not closing properly.

Warm to Hot molding that seals the doors

Either the fan motor has gone bad or the coils under the fridge are too dirty. Both will cause a no cool situation and cause this area to become too hot. Part of the coil runs thru the cabinet in this area to prevent sweating. This is a good indication of dirty coils or a bad/weak fan motor. If your fan was noisy I would replace it before it goes out completely. This excessive heat will lead to premature compressor failure.

Outside surfaces of freezer very hot to touch

it should be warm to the touch but not so hot you cant. and also depending on how long the freezer is running and how warm it is where the freezer is will effect how hot the outside is. the reason the outside of the freezer is hot is because thats how the freezer releses its heat from the refrigerant. the longer it runs or the harder it has to work the more heat it has to hive off. so unless the freezer is not cooling there is nothing to worry about.
