SOURCE: The problem is that when we save or delete files

Download this small file:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/writeenable.reg

Save the file on your desktop. Then double click the writeenable.reg file and click on Yes when Windows asks if yo u want to write to registry.

That;s it. Now you can try to create a new folder on your usb drive and it should be created. That means it's now normal.

You will need to remove the USB and re-plug it or may be a reboot is needed before it will work normally.

Were the changes you made to the drive only with text changes or did you do some attribute changes? If you haven't make attribute changes, then it should save the file without problems unless the total size of the file exceeds the drives total free space, or if the drive is write-protected or damaged. If you can't get it to run any other way, then you might consider reformattting it and starting over. If you have important files you wish to save, then you will need to run some kind of drive data recovery software like BadCopy Pro v4.10.Build.1215 (or similiar) PRIOR to formatting. This program will recover data on just about any media or drive including floppies, usb thumb drives, hard drives, etc.

Restoration problem

How often are restore points created?
Restore points are created automatically every day, and just before significant system events, such as the installation of a program or device driver. You can also create a restore point manually.

How much hard disk space does System Restore require?
To store restore points, you need at least 300 megabytes (MB) of free space on each hard disk that has System Protection turned on. System Restore might use up to 15 percent of the space on each disk. As the amount of space fills up with restore points, System Restore will delete older restore points to make room for new ones.

How long are restore points saved?
Restore points are saved until the hard disk space System Restore reserves is filled up. As new restore points are created, old ones are deleted. If you turn off System Protection (the feature that creates restore points) on a disk, all restore points are deleted from that disk. When you turn System Protection back on, new restore points are created.

The restore point is a built in utility by microsoft, you can't have the option to configure the settings!!!

Not enough space on friends laptop

First you need to disable system restore on the drive to reclaim the missing space. To do this, you can do the following:
1. Go to Start > Control Panel > System
2. In System > Click on System Protection at the left side
3. In the System Protection Window > go to the System Protection Tab > then uncheck C: then hit Apply then OK

After disabling system restore, run disk clean up:
1. Go to Start > Computer > Right-click on C: > Disk Cleanup - make sure to check all of the files to be deleted to clear as much space as possible
2. After initially running Disk Cleanup you will now be able to see the More Options tab in the Disk Cleanup window > go to this tab then cleanup the System Restore and Shadow Copies to remove them completely
3. Enable the System Restore from the System Protection tab in System.
4. Resize the maximum amount of Shadow Copies that can be saved on the system, this will lock the System Restore feature from saving more than allocated amount. Run Command Prompt as administrator (go to Start > Programs > Accesories > then right-click on Command Prompt then Run as Administrator)
Set the maximum to whatever amount you feel is necessary. Setting it to 1GB should be more than enough for System Restore to create at least two restore points. Type the command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=c: /for=c: /maxsize=1gb

5. Once this is done you should have reclaimed at least 30 to 40% of the missing space. Once the System Restore has been reenabled it will automatically create the restore points so there will be no need to manually create one.

The "motorola phone tools" version 4 disk that came with my W510 motorola cell phone will not download to my computer. The following pops up about half way into the setup: feature;program...

Make sure the disk is clean and you do no have any virus protection running while installed. Disable you virus protection.

  1. Go into My Computer, right-click on the drive that contains the CD, Select Copy.
  2. Navigate to your Desktop or other location you will remember. Right-click Paste. (This will create a folder of all the files on the CD Drive where ever you paste them)
  3. If the disk copies successfully, open the folder you have just created. Run the Setup.exe application and install. (However, if it fails to copy there is a problem with the CD or the CDROM drive. In most cases a cheap drive replacement is always available.)
This problem usually occurs when the spin rate of the disc and drive are not transferring data sufficiently to install. This can also be interrupted by virus protection that is reading every file being installed. Other possible problems are loose drive cables, software, poorly burnt discs or damaged media.

Hope this helps.
