Question about HP Pavilion dv1000 Notebook

1 Answer

Someone spilled wine on my HP dv7 Pavilion laptop. I'm trying to open up the keyboard to clean it, but I can't get the switch cover up as the manual instructs and I'm afraid I'm going to break it if I try harder to pry it off. Thanks, J

Go here: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/welcome.html#Support

You will need to enter the exact model number and you will be able to find a PDF file that will show you how to get the keyboard out.

It is actually very easy to do, but you will need the step by step manual if this is your first time working on a lappie.

How do I remove/replace the keyboard from a HP Pavillion dv7-2277cl

1. Remove 6 screws from the bottom of the case (as shown). These screws hold the accessory cover.

2. Remove one screw securing the CD/DVD drive. Slide the CD/DVD drive to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard. Remove the CD/DVD drive.

3. Remove all marked screws from the bottom of the notebook.
The yellow circled screws secure the keyboard cover, and the green one secures the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard.

4. Turn the computer display-side up and open it as far as possible. Insert a guitar pick or small flat screwdriver between the keyboard cover and case and slowly move along the side.

5. Lift the keyboard cover. Be careful, it's still connected to the motherboard. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector and disconnect the cable from the LED board. Remove the keyboard cover.

6. Remove the four screws that secure the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard.

7. Lift the rear edge of the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard until it rests at an angle. Slide the keyboard back to disengage the tabs on the front edge of the keyboard from the top cover and rest it on the display.

8. Release the ZIF connector to which the keyboard cable is attached and disconnect the keyboard cable. Remove the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard.

My hp dv7-1245dx has no response from keyboard and touch pad. I can go into the bios but ther keyboard stops working once in bios. is there anything I can do?

See if you can operate the laptop using an external keyboard. If you can this will help for the next stage.

1.) Did you upgrade from Vista to Win7? This can cause issues with the keyboard filters.
Try to (using the external keyboard and mouse) download the latest drivers for the the motherboard

2.) Have you at any time spilled liquid on the laptop? Dried residue, especially from sugared drinks like coke can cause not only shorting of the circuits but also corrosion.
If this is the case, you will need to open the laptop to try and clean the affected area, you might need to replace the keyboard also

How to clean spill out of keyboard on hp pavilion dv7 1245dx

Best thing to do is to take the keyboard out of the laptop. There is usually a top cover above the keyboard that needs to come off. Then there is some screws holding in the keyboard, unscrew those and then unhook the ribbon part of the keyboard off of the motherboard.

Then at that point take a paper towel or washcloth with glass cleaner and clean all around where the spillage is.

Also clean off the keyboard is well and let it sit for a day so it can dry out.

Then put the keyboard back and see if the keyboard is working properly, if not then you'll need to replace it.

Keyboard spill

First thing you want to do is keep it from getting worse. Open the laptop all the way up and set it keyboard face down on a soft towel to wick away any juice. Once that is dry you can remove the keyboard (or have someone help you) by typing in you model number and "keyboard replacement" in Google - you are bound to find a tutorial. Most of the time you will gently pry up the cover where the on/off switch and panel lights are (above the keyboard) and then remove a couple of screws and lift the keyboard out. Be very careful with the ribbon cable(s) that connect to the motherboard and make sure you have grounded your static electricity (not usu. a problem in the south). Also check that no juice has gone beneath the kbd - if so best to take to a shop for cleaning. Many times you can rinse the keyboard and let it dry and it will work. If not you can get a cheap replacement on eBay.

Very short freezes constantly

There was more damage than just the keyboard, your fault appears intermitten and possibly some connectors and sockets are not making good electrical contact. You need to dismantle the laptop completely to inspect and clean what ever you can with distilled water and let it dry throughly. It still may not work because there may be some electrical damage to some chips and components, especially if the laptop was running at the time of the wine spill.

There is not much help I can offer you except to advise you to buy another laptop, and if the hard drive in the old laptop is OK then buy a USB hard drive case and insert the laptop hard drive in this case and use it as an external USB hard drive. You need to delete all the old system files etc. to maxmise the hard disk space.
