Cobra 18rv cb has 3 power wires, what is the yellow, (aux) wire for?

What is the yellow, (aux) wire for?

The power cord for this cb unit has a black ground wire, a red power wire with fuse, AND a yellow wire with fuse. Cobra calls it the Aux wire. I am mounting this in my car and dont know what to do with the yellow wire.

  • Renee Davis Apr 17, 2014

The Cobra manual says: Connect the red lead of DC power cord to an accessory 12 volt fuse. Connect the orange lead to a constant 12v fuse (ie:cigarette lighter or direct to battery) Connect the black lead to the negative side of the automobile. This is usually the chassis.Any convenient location with good electrical contact (remove paint) may be used. Why can't I just ground the black wire & add the red wire to the battery?

The red lead (switched) turns the radio on when the ignition switch is turned on and off when the ignition switch is turned off. The orange wire is used to keep power constantly going to the radio so you don't lose the last channel you were on, and it gives you emergency weather information even if the radio is off. If you want the radio to stay on all the time even if the ignition switch is turned off then you can just put both wires to a constant power source like directly to the positive post of the battery or an un-switched connection on the fuse panel, and you just turn it off with the volume/power switch. But you have to remember to turn the radio off or you could drain the battery in a few days. So the choice is yours. :)

Here are the Pin outs for different mics that will work with your radio. If a wire is not listed then you cut it off. It's best to keep the wires as short as possible no longer than a half inch is suggested. Normally the Cobra pin out is standard for most radios.

I need the wiring for the mic

Hello,
Here is the wire diagram for several common mics in relation to a 4 pin CB. Most recent 4 pin CB's such as Midland, Cobra, Connex, Uniden, etc can use 4 pin mics. The wiring is actually depending on the mic rather than the CB so long as the CB's are 4 pin as well. Once you go back to late 80's the 4 pin design was a little different. Anything new it is simpler.
