Question about Maxtor Hard Drive

1 Answer

Maxtor 6Y160MO always tunrs off and it takes time to spin when I want it accessed

I have two hard drives in the Vista system
C: runs the OS
D: stores the data

The D drive Maxtor 6Y160MO always turns off and it takes time to spin when I want to access it. It only spins for few seconds and then it turns off again. There is no setting in Vista to control this behavior. I thought that the “ALWAYS ON” option would control this but it doesn't.
Any ideas?

Maybe you turn-off the hard drive at your power scheme on your screen saver.

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, after years of use my Vista machine now tells me that the USB Device isnt recognised.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

hope this helps

I have a Maxtor External Personal Storage 3100.

Here is a link to the Maxtor install guide for your drive. From what I can see there are also some diagnostic tools however / the listed supported OS does not include Vista but - if your running Vista 32 bit OS - try the XP tools. Affraid to say though it may be time for an upgrade.

Does it give you an error message ? Are you running Windows XP or Vista? If so post it here so the problem can be further narrowed down.
You might want to try a chkdsk.

In Windows XP and Vista both, a shortcut to get to the command console is holding the Windows Key and pressing R.

in the command console, type:
chkdsk X: /f /r

Where X is the drive letter of the drive giving you problems.

This will run a chkdsk on your external, restoring files and folders that cannot be accessed.

I also have a Maxtor External hard drive and have to do this quite often. It's pretty frustrating.

Maxtor external hard drive takes all system resources from pc

I hate to be the one to say this but the reason you are seeing the spike in CPU usage when you connect the hard drive is because the computer is trying to read the hard drive and the hard is beginning to go bad, I would recommend taking the hard drive to a repair shop mom and pop type they often have the best rates and ask them to recover the data.

Treat the hard drive as if it were an egg bumps can make it very difficult to recover your data that you need. That is if you have any..
I deal with hard drives for a living this happens to my laptop and quad core desktop all the time but i am always able to get the data if they bring it to me before it gets worse

DONT RUN THE HARD DRIVE time is critical...

I wish you the best of luck

The hard disk in drive D: is not accessible

Hope I can help you with your problem. If your hard drive was installed to be used as D: in your old computer then you will have to set it up to be D: in the new computer. This may be why it is not being recognized. You can do this by connecting it as a slave on the primary IDE cable.
Also you will need to check the jumper on the hard drive to make sure it is set in the slave position.
