Power cords for small electric devices supply a specific combination of volts and amps (milliamps) to the device. Most power cords of this type are actually mini step down transformers used to regulate the voltage/amperage to a pre determined level that matches the device, using a cord that has a lower volt/amp level may do nothing as the power level is not high enough to power the device, but using a cord with a higher than specified level will almost certainly destroy the sensitive electronic components (resistors, capacitors, etc.) inside making the circuit board that controls the device useless. Check your device and owners manual for a reset switch (I doubt it has one though), or if it is valuable, you may want to search for an electronics repair store (they are getting hard to find) and see if it can be repaired. This applies to most all small electronics from phones to computers, use the supplied power cord, and if you purchase an aftermarket power supply device make sure the voltage/amperage numbers match exactly. In the end saving a few dollars on a cord can be very expensive.

Sounds like a dirty receptacle. If you're a smoker, I guarantee that's the problem. Take the cigarette lighter fuse out of your vehicle and clean the receptacle with sandpaper wrapped around a small stick. Good luck!

SOURCE: reading the radar detector

These are just the frequency ranges, or "bands" that your detector is detecting the frequencies...

X, K, Ka (Kappa-Alpha) are different bands of frequencies.

Sonic Cobra 360 10 band laser radar detector doesn't work two cords of power is it radar itself does notwhat could be wrong

Maybe the fuse for the accessory port / cigarette lighter is blown. Check the fuse map for your car and confirm if the fuse is good or not. Or, if you have another device that uses the port, plug it in and see if it gets power.

Wont power on

Have you pressed or pushed in the Power button? have you checked the radar detector's power cord fuse? Its located in the plug part of the cord. If that is ok, have you checked the lighter socket? Does it power other 12 volt devices?

Whistler 1730 keeps blowing fuses. no other problems with cigarette lighter plug

Is the lighter socket fuse blowing or the fuse in the unit's power cord? Have you tried another power cord from a Friends radar detector? If it doesn't blow that power cord's fuse, then your power cord is bad. If it does blow the fuse in the other power cord, there could be something wrong with the unit. Contact Whistler at

Whistler 1480 does not power up.

Does the lighter socket power other devices? If so, did you check the fuse in the units power cord? Its in the plug part that goes into the lighter socket. Its a 2 amp fuse.

Laser goes off when i am driving in area were there is no buildings or police cars also goes to k ban what is this problem

A lot of the time this is caused by a somewhat flaky power connection to the radar detector, or may be caused by excessive electrical system noise created by your car's alternator. The cigarette lighter socket itself my be the problem due to oxidation within the socket. Do you get false laser alerts when you rev your car's engine to certain RPM's? Do you get either laser or radar falses if you jiggle the radar detector's power cord or slightly move it plug in the cigarette lighter socket? If yes, to either, then installing a hardwire power kit may solve the problem. Jump over to and describe the problems you are having with your radar detector. Most likely they will help you to track down the source of the problem.
