I had a simular problem with my 99 sportsman 500 and it turned out to be my pulse coil somehow became out of alinement. The pulse coil air gap should be between0.016 to 0.040 inch, But I would start by checking the coil it should read 0.3 to 0.5 ohms. Good luck and hope this helps

Anyone can tell me about the overheating light on the 2003 500cc. When should the fan kick in, after the light comes on or before. Went riding and the light came on then went off without the fan kicking...

Assuming you have a sportsman. The fan should come on before the light comes on. The fan is supposed to come on when the engine reaches 180 +/- 3 and should cut off when the engine goes back down to 149 +/- 8 and the overheating light will come on at 221 degrees. Your thermostatshould start opening at 176 degrees f and is fully opened at 205 degrees f. I would check the thermostat switch or first the fuse. You can check by disconnect the fan motor connector, then use two jumper wires ( negative battery terminal to the brown wire and the positive terminal to the red/ white or theorange/ black wire) if the fan kicks on its the switch as long as the wires look good. If it doesn't come on probably the fan motor. Hope this helped

Cooling fan polaris 500

thermostat switch has been by-passed, when machine gets up to temp, the switch sends power to the fan, when the switch goes bad the machine will overheat due to the fan not kicking on. make sure the switch has not been by-passed and wired direct.

Bogging and electrical failure on polaris 2 stroke atv

i'm just searching the web for a different 2 stroke problem, but have some experience in off-road bikes (atv shouldn't be to much different) - it sounds like it is an electrical connection to me (or earth)..

The way I would deal with it (and did on my 2 stroke jetski last weekend) is to systematically go through and check all of the terminals by pulling them apart and pushing them back together. Sometimes there can be a build-up in there, or if they come apart very easily that could be your trouble one?

To reduce the number that you test - see if you can get hold of a workshop manual and check the wiring diagram. Because both the fan and the lights were affected, this will narrow-down which ones you need to check.

i downloaded a full workshop manual from (see the list right at the bottom) if your quad isn't there, email the guy because he probably has it anyhow - It cost me $5 US to download the entire manual - well worth the investment!

Hope this helpped.
