Adjustment of the gas air mixture on a Ryobi ss30 weed eater

The weed eater will only run at normal high speed when you have the choke on 1/2 or more, it is starved for gas. I took off the carburator, removed the lower diaphragm, the pump appears to be working fine. There is only 1 screw under the diaphragm and it appears to be tight and not adjustable. there are two plastic adjustment on the front of the carburator but adjusting while the unit was running did nothing. Any help on the location of the lean mixture screw??

The exhaust screen and filter are not the problem so don`t waste you time and money.
it sounds like a blown seal, or gasket, remove all of the plastic from the engine and look for black soot or gas & oil coming out from one of them.
also make sure that all screws are tight especially on the head.
make sure you also check the seal on the front and back of the crank shaft.

Aside from carb adfustment. remove exhaust screen and scrape off carbon with piece of wood. also repplace the fuel pickup filter in the tank. couple buck at the home depot.

have to go further in the carb, If you left 'todays' ethanol gas in the weed eater for more then a few months, it probably messed up the Carb. Ethanol gas is very bad for carburators on any machine

This is a tell tale sign of a lean fuel mixture. By choking the unit you are manually creating a richer fuel mixture. I would purchase a compression tester from a local parts store and check compression. If that's ok, I'm willing to bet the problem is still carb related. Two stroke carbs are tricky to clean because of high/low ports that are one way and sometimes impossible to clean. Did you remove high and low needles when cleaning carb? Another trick is to mix seafoam with your gas, then mix two cycle oil to proper ratio. Use 2 ounces seafoam to one gallon of gas, then mix two cycle oil to proper mix. Hope this helps! Good luck and happy wrenching!

Ryobi CS30 Trimmer starts and runs in full choke and half choke but stumbles and stalls on run. Not up to full rpms when in full choke and half choke....

You probably need a slight carburetor adjustment. Try to turn the L mixture screw (the one near the bottom of the carburetor on the air filter side, closest to the engine) 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn counterclockwise. These mixture adjustment screws ( L and H) have odd heads on them and conventional tools won't turn them. I use an automotive type plastic wire connector (around 22 gauge) with a ring terminal end which I can hold. Tap the plastic end of the wire terminal connector onto the head of the screw with a small hammer and this will enable you to adjust the L screw. This adjustment will increase you high speed side and possibly allow it to run off choke in a regular manner.

Blower only runs with full choke. When I switch to half choke, it dies and won't start.

it may simply need the high speed jet opening up a bit (2 screws near eachother on the carb and the high speed is furthest from the engine)
failing that it needs a carb kit.... this is a serviceable item changed regularly.

Weed Eater Problems

If it runs with the choke closed then it's not getting enough gas. Check the gas filter on the end of the gas line in the gas tank. Remove the gas cap and using a piece of wire with a hook on the end, reach in the tank and pull the gas line out through the opening. Check the filter on the end of it. You could also have a burst-ed diaphragm in the carburetor. This sucks the gas from the tank to the carb. If that's the case a new weed eater may be in order unless you can find someone with the parts to repair it. Also check the gas lines for leaks or breaks, 2 of them.

I have a 31 cc ryobi weed eater start for about

I think a new carburetor kit and a good carburetor tune up is in order my friend. Sounds like it's starving for gas. If it bogs down after warm up when you throttle it, then yes it needs a carb tuning. The L screw is the low side screw and should be turned in lightly until it seats then back it out one and quarter turns (1 1/4). The H screw is your high speed screw. Also, turn it in lightly until it seats, then back it out approximately a 3/4 turn. With these settings the unit should start and may even stay running. Again, if it bogs when throttled, while running turn the L screw out a little more maybe only 1/16th of a turn and then try it again. If it does rev then you'll have to adjust the H screw in about a 1/16th of a turn. But make sure you only do this after the engine has warmed up.

Hope this works, good luck
