SOURCE: Infrared Heater - flaming thru plaque

I had this problem. From using the center brick most of the time, lots of dust bunnies build up in the gas chimney behind the brick.
Tie 2 pipe cleaners together with a small perpendicular circle at the top and carefully remove the dust bit by bit by twirling the cleaner.
The brick should fire like new if it is carefully cleaned out.

SOURCE: heater fires up and runs

check ignitor element. sometimes they rust and get loose. replace if element is loose. this causes an open and the ignitor fails putting out the flame and then the safety kicks on turning off the heater blower.

SOURCE: My goodman heater is a forced hot air gas heater

This sounds like the gas valve is either not opening, or you do not have gas at the unit. After the hot surface igniter glows, you should here another click a little bit afterwards. This click is the gas valve opening, then blows through the burners. Make sure there is gas to the unit first, and if so, the valve may need to be replaced. You could also have a problem with the control board or even the pressure switch sometimes. Hope this helps or at least points you in the right direction.

Fire was working fine, then flame effect stopped. Heater still works on both settings, but no flame effect. Tried new bulbs, but still no flame effects, any ideas?

If it is not the bulbs, it is often a melted switch or circuit board.

Flame effect electric fire loud clicking noise

You need a new synchronous motor. This is the small motor which turns the flame effect rod. They are notorious for becoming noisy.

Why heater coils glow?

It sounds like you're describing one of two things. The hot surface ignitor in a gas-fired furnace, or the resistive heat strips in an electric furnace.

The hot surface ignitor in a gas-fired furnace lights the burners. This ignitor in modern furnaces serves the same purpose as the standing pilot flame did in older furnaces. It provides the required heat to ignite the gas at the burners. Without an ignition source, a gas-fired furnace cannot provide heat. When the ignitor is activated it will glow bright orange or yellow.

The resistive heat strips in an electric furnace actually provide the heat to a home or building. When the furnace turns on, the heat strips are activated and usually glow orange when they reach peak temperature. In almost all cases, the heat strips are not easily seen or accessed without removing covers or panels inside the furnace.

if its an electric flame effect fire, your globes may be blown or if they have inline fuses to globes they might be blown so you need to replace faulty part call an electrician if your unsure of how to test these parts for faults

My Laars LX pool heater would shut off soon after it fires up

This error is Automatic Gas Shutdown. Here is what you can do:

  1. Check for fluctuating pump pressure (air in strainer, pressure guage bounce)
  2. Check all wiring connections
  3. Replace ignitor/flame sensor assembly
Depending on your expertise, it could also be the gas valve or ignition control (aka the IID).

Since the burners do fire briefly, I would suspect the flame sense rod first. Attached is a link to the owners manual in PDF.

Lo Nox heaters can be a little tough so follow the directions exactly.

AO Smith Burner Issues

This system uses an electrical test to make sure that the burner is lit. The flame sensor will either be broken or will be covered in deposits (clean with an emery cloth).

The flame sensor is usually a small metal rod that would be in the direct line of fire of the burner with 1 wire attached.

CAUTION:

The ignitors can be very fragile and are expensive. They are very brittle, do not touch it.
