As soon as I put a tape in the camera light starts flashing, then I get the error message. After about half an hour searching the manual (nothing in there about the reset button), I finally found it next to the tape eject button, pressed it and got the message 'Service'. I spent around $400 trying to get this fixed and it worked for about 5 minutes. What can I do now?
When you switch it on the red led will light up but within 10 seconds it will flash and then a message on the screen will come on to tell you to reset then tell you "in service".
This will repeat itself forever to frustrate you no end but I have stumbled onto tricking it into working, ie get the led on without progressing to flash. Try switching it on and as soon the led comes on, switch it off, do this a few times, then leave the switch on and voila it might stay on like it did for me.
Just now I have ran it for an hour, switch it off then after 30 seconds turn it back on and it stays on.
I thick the reset button is all bull. Let me know how it all went or am I all bull for your NV-DS38.

Hello & Welcome to FixYa Flashing light is reset by pressing two buttons in sequence 3-4 times, to reset your dishwasher press these buttons in sequence: High temp wash-heated dry-high temp wash-heated dry Please get back to me if you have any other questions. Kevin
I also have the same problem and after almost buying a replacement I thought I would try one time to get it to go.
I did was start the cam without a tape in it, let it bring up the
little red icon indicating no tape inserted, (it hadn't started
flashing "PLEASE RE-OPERATE AFTER PUSHING RESET BUTTON" at this stage)
then I inserted my tape. Hey presto, it works although for how long I
don't know. I'll immediately start burn my tapes to disc while the
going is good.
The problem is with the S-reel. Take the tape out, remove the battery, and give it a slight bump. This usually fixes the issue for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard of any permenant fixes. I took my cam into circuit city (before they closed) twice for the same issue. Very frustrating when you don't know what the issue is.
Turn the unit off and hit the back of the camera twice near the battery compartment with the palm of your hand. Sounds crazy but it worked with my camcorder Sony DCR-TRV480. Problem started when I used 8MM Head Cleaner. I think the roller got stuck inside camcorder. The trouble code came up C:31:22. Hope this helps.
a: try the reset button ( next to the eject button ( you have to press it with a pen)
b: change the internal battery
c: take the tape out, give everything a shake and put the tape back in, make sure the door is firmly closed. This fixed my problem when I had these error messages.
Just had this problem myself... called Sony. Here is what I did to fix this:
1. Turn off power 2. Open the LCD Display 3. Press "Reset" with paperclip/pen 4. Unplug ANY wires connected to the camcorder 5. Eject battery 6. Plug in DC charger 7. Power on 8. Attempt to eject tape 9. At this point, the metal tape holder comes out but refuses to open... slightly "close" the portion of the camcorder that has the button to eject the tape, and then open it fully again (you'll hear a click, this signals the device that the 'hatch' is open and to eject). 10. The metal door *should* pop out and allow you to withdraw the tape.
I've tried 4 different cassettes and about 2 seconds after hitting play, I get the error every time... my solution: Not going to try to play my tapes on the camcorder anymore... will find another player to play Hi8 MP cassettes. Unknown if able to record to tape as of yet.
