Question about Hayward H Series Pool & Spa Heater 400k Btu Propane Gas Milivolt Ignition H400p1

1 Answer

Heater turns off a few seconds after ignition

I changed my igniter but did not help. I still end up getting an IF falure. Strangely, after the unit has been rained on for a long time the heater will stay on much longer then turns off after 10 or 15 min. Hayward thinks its an electrical problem. any suggestions or ideas or any voltage measurements I can check to narrow the problem down would be appreciated.

    Hi John,

I understand and could very well be a grounding problem. I will look for and remove rust or anything else. In the mean time, is there a voltage measurement I can take that will determine if there is a problem with the signal getting to the control module or if the control module needs to be replaced.

    Thank you for your help!!!

Flame rectification is made by a ground signal in the heater. Wet heater = better grounding = longer running time. Look for rusty areas in and around the ignitor area and wire brush them off so the signal that the ignitor has a pilot flame on can get to the board. The only other problem could be the control module itself not recognizing the rectification signal which would mean a new module.

If it's a direct spark ignition type heater maybe that's how it's designed to.work .When called for heat pilot open allowing gas then ignitor spark and ignite the pilot then gas valve open and allow gas through burner then unit fires off .
Once temp is met pilot valve closes and pilot out .

Try checking the air line and make sure it's tight where it connects to the compressor and the fuel nozzle. Also check the fuel line where it connects to the fuel filter and the fuel nozzle. If the ends are cracked or stretched, make sure you will have enough left to reconnect then and trim some off of the ends so they will fit tight and won't leak air. Let me know if this doesn't help. If it does please take time to vote and leave feedback. nitensheaterservice@earthlink.net

How can i tell if my toyostove laser72 igniter is working properly after i have removed it from the unit

If the igniter is still out of the heater, it will get hot enough to burn you in just a couple of seconds if you turn the heater on. You can test the igniter with an ohmmeter. If you connect the ohmmeter to the 2 ends of the igniter you should get 10 - 17 ohms if it is good. With the igniter installed in the heater you can put a clamp on ammeter around just 1 of the leads for the igniter and should get between 2 - 5 amps if it is working. You can also feel the cap over the end of the igniter. Turn the heater on and the cap should start to get warm in 30 - 60 seconds but may take longer. Also, if the igniter is not working you will not see any flame after the 3 minute warm up the heater goes through. Of course this could also be caused by a lack of fuel. The quickest way is either the ohmmeter or ammeter and takes any guess work out it.

Check the air lines going to air pressure switch for cracks or splits. I know that will affect the gas valve but not sure if that is your problem.

I have a Pentair Mastertemp 250 pool heater with an error message E05. What does this mean?

This is an ignition flame falure code. Could be you don't have gas getting to the pilot, no spark to ignite the pilot or your ignition is not reading the flame. Sorry to say but it's probally time to get the pool guy out to look at it. Good luck.

When i turn on sta rite spa heater , i can hear it start up , and run for about 20 seconds , then shuts off , EO5 appears on control board with red light next to service heater , whats wrong ?

This is an ignition falure code. What you hear is the fan starting not the heater fireing. This can be a number of things and sorry to say but you should have a repairman out to look at the heater. The gambet runs from very frail parts to just plain dangerous and should have a qualified person check it out.

H250 inground pool heater turns on 5 seconds shuts off flsahing 1f

This is a code for ignition falure. If you are getting a pilot then it means your Ignition module is not sensing the flame and shuting the gas down. This could be pilot wire burnt and grounding or a pilot flame not reaching the sensor or a bad ignition module. This is the expensive part so look into the other things first. Good luck.

Sounds like this is a flame sensor issue. It is not detecting the flame.
