It could be a number of things ... motherboard failure, RAM failure, or Hard Drive failure.

Are there lights on the back, numbered 1-2-3-4 that are lit up in colors like green or orange?

Does the computer emit any beeps? If so, how many beeps?
One quick loud BEEP, at start up means that all is loading OK. If you get more than one BEEP sound, than you could have Memory ( RAM ) that is, or has failed. Sometimes, if one of the internal fans has failed or is failing, a computer will start up, and than shut itsself down again. Look for any error messages that may come across the screen. Get on another computer, and search for "computer beep codes". If you have the original manual that came with the computer, sometimes it will list beep codes in it. As it has been pointed out, it could be the hard drive also, check the beep codes, that is a good place to start.

I just remembered this one old E-Machines computer of a customer of mine that was starting up, and going black, than shutting down. It turned out to be the Processor fan had failed, and the computer was shutting its self off in order to keep the processor from burning up. Take off the side of the computer if you can, and start it up. Look at the fans etc. and try to see if they are turning fast, or turning at all. If they are not turning fast or not at all, than that is most likely the reason why your computer is acting up the way it is.
