Hello mfry.... It is true that these glass tops do get more brittle as time goes on and there is the chance that it could break. That said, if the top breaks, you can generally buy a replacement top. I would begin by removing the glass. If it doesn't break on the way out it probably won't break. Once the top is off, then get the replacement ignitor.
