Question about Air Tools & Compressors

Air compressor motor stalls under pressure

Bought a used electric Campbell Hausfeld air compressor, 1.5 HP 11 gal "Super Pal" model LT500800, used very little recent years. Will start from 0 psi and go to 90 psi auto shutoff, but sometimes only to 80 psi and then stalls (hums). Tries to restart (hums) at kick on pressure, but won't run unless psi is about 15. Same results in two different garages.

Thanks for your reply. It turned out to be burned contacts in the pressure switch, so the motor wasn't getting full current and didn't have the umpf to start when there was pressure in the tank. The unloader valve was working OK. When starting at 0 psi, in could maintain enough momentum to reach shut off pressure. thanks again!

This sounds like a bad pressure switch.if the unit is not shutting off at the same pressure each time this would be the cause.2 if the pressure is not unloading the air pressure on the compressor side of the unit it will cause the unit to struggle when it starts a cycle because the piston is under a load .how this works is say the unit starts from 0 psi when it get to the desired pressure you have it set on the unit kicks off . the other adjustment most units have on them is what pressure to cycle back on.so when the unit reaches say 100 pounds ,it kicks off and bleeds the air off the compressor side so when it starts back up it wont start up with pressure on the piston.

Campbell Hausfeld Air Compressor 1.8hp 135 max psi 20 gal wl611800aj the prob is there is a fluild leaking from the motor

You compressor is listed as being oil free. The only liquids that could possibly leak out of the motor (if still from factory condition) is black substance from overheated capacitor/s or grease from a failing bearing. Remove capacitor covers and check for failed cap. Motor bearings will become noisy before failure. Capacitors are available from motor repair shops and many times on ebay. Replace with same uf rating and same or higher voltage. Some caps are larger /smaller with same reading (notice size so cap cover will fit). Good luck

Compressor trips breaker on re-load

if it has been an on going problem i would suspect that your power cord is too small, try a outlet closer to the breaker system.or get a bigger cord if one is used.is it maintaining pressure in the tank?if not a check valve is defective, you should hear air leaking if this is the case.let us know.
