Question about Air Tools & Compressors

Air compressor can't start (hums) under pressure

Just bought a used Campbell Hausfeld 1.5 HP 11 gal. ''Super Pal'' 110v electric air compressor. Hasn't been used much in last few years. Has trouble starting under pressure (hums). Will start from 0 psi and go to 90 and auto shutoff, sometimes only makes it to 80 psi, then stalls (humming). Can't restart until about 15 psi. Same results in two different garages.

Thanks for your reply. It turned out to be burned contacts in the
pressure switch, so the motor wasn't getting full current and didn't
have the umpf to start when there was pressure in the tank. The
unloader valve was working OK. When starting at 0 psi, in could
maintain enough momentum to reach shut off pressure. thanks again!

SOURCE: Air compressor motor stalls under pressure

this sounds like a bad pressure switch.if the unit is not shutting off at the same pressure each time this would be the cause.2 if the pressure is not unloading the air pressure on the compressor side of the unit it will cause the unit to struggle when it starts a cycle because the piston is under a load .how this works is say the unit starts from 0 psi when it get to the desired pressure you have it set on the unit kicks off . the other adjustment most units have on them is what pressure to cycle back on.so when the unit reaches say 100 pounds ,it kicks off and bleeds the air off the compressor side so when it starts back up it wont start up with pressure on the piston.

dont know size of unit ---if 220 check power in- under that will bog motor same with 110v --if using extension cords to long a feed from source and your voltage drops from resistance in wires ---motor may need service oil bearings --same with compressor motor oil change/needs oil added

Electric compressor motor problem

Unloader valve on switch. That switch is not bleeding off cylinder head pressure, when it shuts off.

Compressor trips breaker on re-load

if it has been an on going problem i would suspect that your power cord is too small, try a outlet closer to the breaker system.or get a bigger cord if one is used.is it maintaining pressure in the tank?if not a check valve is defective, you should hear air leaking if this is the case.let us know.

Compressor runs hot and won't build pressure

THE COPPER LINE IS SUPPOSED TO GET HOT, SCALDING HOT ACTUALLY. THE MOST COMMON REASON FOR COMPRESSORS NOT BUILDING PRESSURE IS CLOGGED AIR FILTER OR THE VALVES IN THE HEAD ARE BROKEN OR NOT OPENING AND CLOSING CORRECTLY. YOU MAY POSSIBLY HAVE A BAD AIR LEAK DOWNSTREAM BUT YOU CAN CLOSE THE DISCHARGE VALVE ON THE TANK TO ELIMINATE THAT PROBLEM. HOPE THIS HELPS OR GET YOU STARTED.
