My 2001 saturn sl1 front end clunk when driving

You have not described it very well so it could be a number of different items.

If it sounds like a rotational clunk the it will possibly be the CV joints that need replacing.

If it is not a rotational type clunk then it will most likely be a suspension component. It could be as simple as a worn suspension bushing that it allowing metal to metal contact or something much more significant in the front suspension system.

Without physically checking the vehicle it is difficult to be more definitive but needless to say you must have it checked out and the cause identified.

Replaced complete control arm with new ball joint but still clunking.. can it be the wrong bolt or wrong hardness of bolt??

Is the clunking occuring when steering or just on rough roads? With suspension clunks tie rod ends are the most comonly over looked component. To check the tie rod ends jack up each side individually and place jack supports under vehichle in manufacturer allocated position with the parking brake on , on a flat surface . Check the tire deflection by attempting to turn the tire by hand in a side to side fasion also check the lateral deflection of the wheel bearings . There are inner and outer tie rod ends on your vehichle . Other suspension components that can cause clunking are the struts to check these bounce the car as you would a basket ball with your hand by pressing firmly down on each front corner and releasing you may hear the clunk during this test as well.

try changing the shock absorbers bushes. also sometimes the springs clunk because when someones removed them they've forgot to put the rubber back in between the spring and the body.

My 99 GMC suburban 4&4, has this clunking noise in the front when I go over speed bumps, replaced shocks, but no help, any ideas?

Inspect rubber bushings in the suspension, it is at the age where they will start to wear out. Also inspect the ball joints, these can make a lot of noise when going out.

Knocking on steering / braking

Sway bar links are also part of the suspension that you really can't feel while driving. If you're handy enough take your front wheel off and you'll see a bar passing through to each side of your front suspension. It is connected to the lower control arm by sway bar links. The links have ball joints enclosed by rubber boots with grease. Eventually this grease will come out or the boots will tear and you'll hear metal on metal while force is applied. These are fairly cheap to buy yet you may have some trouble getting them off without air tools. If you try to do it your self i'd suggest spraying the bolts down with some lubrication.
