This is a sign of a worn drum getting hotter and causing it to attact toner to areas of the drum as it goes.
I wonder if the copier is properly grounded allowing static to drain to ground? I also wonder if you set the contrast lower if it would reverse the problem.
At any rate just about everything that can go wrong with this copier is replaced when u buy that drum so before the expense, check the ground with one of those silly lights you get from Home depot and plug it in to be sure.
