SOURCE: Wrong answer produced in sin / cos problems?

5sin(x)+1 = 0 is the equation you want to solve?
so
5sin(x) = -1
sin(x) = -(1/5)
arcsin( sin(x) ) = arcsin( -(1/5) )
x = -.201 (radians)
x = -11.5369 (degrees)

How do I input into the calculator sin squared 45. The answer is 0.75 but how do I go about it on the calculator?


SOHCAHTOA.

Sine is the Opposite divided by the Hypotenuse.
Let's use a triangle with both sides equal to 1 and the hypotenuse will be a^2 + b^2 = c^2, or 1^2 + 1^2 = c^2, or c^2 = 2, so c = square root (2).

So in this triangle, the sin 45 degrees is 1/square root 2 or 0.7071.

Sin square 45 is really sin 45 squared. So we get our answer 0.7071 and square it, and we get 0.5.

My calculator is not computing sin^-1 or cos^-1 correctly, I put sin^-1(0.184) in and it came out with 10.60283... when I should be getting 1.39. HALP?


When the angle unit is in radians
sin^-1(0.184)=0.1850543940 radians
When angle unit is in degrees
sin^-1(0.185)=10.60283581

In the following screen captures the sine of the values is calculated with the unit specified inside the formula (degree symbol and radian symbol are inserted to show you the unit). In the last calculation the value of the sine is practically 0.184
Remember that when angle is in radians, for very small angles (less than 10 degrees), sin(x) and tan (x) are about equal to the value of the angle in radians

Cot(x) = -0.6


Let's start with a little background.

The cot(x) is also known as the cotangent(x) and it equals 1/tan(x) which equals cos(x)/sin(x). I'm showing these formulas because your calculator may not have a cot button but it will probably have buttons for tan, cos, and sin.

Your calculator may also have buttons for tan-1, cos-1 and sin-1. These are the inverse functions for tan, cos, and sin. If you enter a number and then push the tan-1 button, the result is the angle whose tangent is the entered number. For example, it you enter 1 and push the tan-1 button the answer will be 45 deg because tan (45 deg) = 1.

Now let's look at the problem, cot(x) = -0.6.
The first thing we need to know is do you want the answer in degrees or radians? Your calculator will have both modes. The default mode when you first turn it on is probably degrees. If this problem is in radians you will need to change the mode of your calculator over to radians before we start.

If cot(x) = -0.6, then tan(x) = 1/-0.6 from the formula I showed in the background section.

This means tan(x) = -1.6666666...

Now we just enter -1.66666667 and hit the tan-1 button to get the answer.

If we're operating in radians the answer is -1.0307 radians.
If we're operating in degrees the answer is -59.036 deg.

My calculator is not showing the 'm' on the top of the screen as being highlighted! How do i fix that?? cuz, because of that, i cant use sin-1 or cos-1


30 is the correct value for sin-1(0.5) in degrees.

The 'm' merely indicates that you have a nonzero value stored in the memory register. If it's not highlighted, then you have zero stored in there. That's all. It doesn't affect the operation of the calculator in any way.

How to solve for the trigonometric functions in the casio scientific calculator?


Press the relevant function key [SIN],[COS],[TAN] followed by the angle value.
For inverse trigonometric functions [SIN^-1], COS^-1], or [TAN^-1], Press [SHIFT][SIN], [SHIFT][COS], or [SHIFT][TAN].
For other functions
sec(x)=1/cos(x)
csc(x)=1/sin(x)
cot(x)=1/tan(x)

When calculating trigonometric functions one must make sure that the angle unit the calculator is using is the correct one.

so
5sin(x) = -1
sin(x) = -(1/5)
arcsin( sin(x) ) = arcsin( -(1/5) )
x = -.201 (radians)
x = -11.5369 (degrees)

How do you use the sin-1


You would press on the SIN key, "sin(" should come on the display, then enter the value, for example 3.5 or -1 so that the display shows

sin(3,5) or sin(-1) for example.

remember to close the sin with the ) on the end.
sin(-1) = -0.841470985

Find csc(-330°) to the nearest hundredth


The cosecant function does not have a specific key on any calculator because it can be easily calculated as the reciprocal of sine.
Thus csc(-330°)=1/sin(-330°)=2
sin(-330°)=sin(360°-330°)=sin(30°)=0.5
csc(-330°)=1/0.5=2
If you do not want to be bothered with these facts, just calculate the sine of -330° and take the reciprocal of the result using the [x^-1] key. For the minus sign before 330, use the change sign key (-). Close the right parenthesis.

1.Set the correct angle unit required by your problem: degrees, radians, or grads. [SHIFT][MODE] [3:deg] or [4:Rad]

2. Press the key for the function COS, SIN, or TAN
[COS] displays Cos(

3.Enter the angle 12 deg Screen shows cos(12
Close the right parenthesis ) Screen shows cos(12)
4.Press [=] Screen displays 0.9781

If you want the inverse trigonometric functions you access them with arccos [SHIFT] [COS] (cos^-1)
arcsin [SHIFT][SIN] (sin^-1)
actan [SHIFT][TAN] (tan^-1)

You have to know the principal domain for the inverse trigonometric functions (see any book on trigonometry) to understand the results.

Put the calculator in radian mode. Find the sine of the angle (sin(angle)), invert the result (1/x or x^(-1)). csc = 1 / sin
