Bolens riding mower runs free downhill and wont brake. it is a 15.5hp, 6sp with 38inch deck. i suspect problem with tranny or belts. Other things it does is once mower is engaged it wont stop the blad

It sounds like you have two problems. As for the downhill, there is an adjustment that needs to be done to the brakes. The blade problem is usually caused by the deck drive belt being too short or covered with grease and dirt. Try cleaning it first and then if that doesn't help then replace it.

SOURCE: Craftsman 42" mower deck won't disengage

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

Try starting this without the blades engaged. Bottoming out will affect the deck but not the motor. In fact, remove the drive belt for the mower altogether and see if the engine runs fine. If this is the case then you have to look at where the damage is on the deck.

I have a Bolens Model 13AM762F765 38inch cut 15.5 HP twin blade lawn tractor. It runs like a champ as long as I do not engage the blades or put it in reverse. It will stall if either of these two things...

Sounds like a safety switch. Just as there is a safety switch under the seat that shuts mower off if you get off seat while engine is running, theres also safety switches for, pto, drive, reverse, etc. I would get a multimeter and look for switches under chassis and test with meter for continuity.

After I apply the brake going downhill, etc., the mower jerks severely and repetitively in forward gear like the transaxle is slipping and catching. Any ideas why?

I believe when you push in the brake you remove tension from the drive belt and engine. Their is a spring that pushes back on the brake pulley and your peddle. check this for wear

I have a bolens mower and just had the engine

Mine always slows down when I engage the mower drive. Since you just reinstalled the motor, I'd suggest checking the belt tension. Might be too tight.

Good luck

Bolens is now owned by MTD. Find parts for your machine at http://www.bolens.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/topcategory_10151_15953_-1 or your local MTD/Bolens dealer

The bigger challenge you will have is getting the engine running again unless you have maintained it the past 7 years. My free advice is get the motor running and make sure the tractor still functions before you start adding accessories. Once you have driven it around the block once or twice, then get the parts you need to operate the deck. I think these parts will be a little pricy.

I say these things because of a similar experience with a International Cub I got. I spent a lot of money to get the mower running before I got the tractor running, reliably. I didnt get my fair value from my $ as a result. I then bought a geenuine Troy and have never looked back. (MTD owns the Troy brand now also.)

Good luck with your project
