Hi Mean Gene

The problem here is I don't have enough information on your laptop. Your first step may be to install an application like ccleaner which allows you to run a scan on your computer for a variety of of issues and remove them automatically.

That being said Sony Vaio's are notorious for being "restricted" notebooks. What I mean with that is that Sony tends to build these machines with some rather extreme limitations which make the machines over time obsolete due to Windows' and other Software updates.

To give you an example Sony built a fantastic series of Windows Vista (okay not the best operating system) Notebooks which had all the specifications and features to run Windows 7 smoothly if you upgraded your ram. That being said you could not upgrade the ram, they limited the maximum amount of ram to 2gb which was bare minimum for any operating system at that point. This was done to compete in pricing and encourage further sales in the near future.

This I hope explains why I can't give you exact information based on your information. However running a piece of software like ccleaner will definitely get you going. Additionally if you have 2gb or less of ram then you have to see if your model of notebook can be upgraded as this will be a large factor in your machines performance (same applies to your hard drive).

Okay I hope this helped you at all and not just overwhelm you.

Did you go to this web page

If yes, have you tried the Option 1: AUTO DETECT (VAIO PCs ONLY)

What does this do?

This support option allows the support web site to determine your Sony VAIO computer model and forward you directly to your model support page.

After selecting this option for the first time you will be prompted to download a small program that will enable this feature.

The "Detect and Continue feature works on most Sony VAIO computers when using the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.

That should help you

I have a Dell, recently (this week) when I turn it on I get a black screen with a message regarding the AC power can't be found but once I hit F1 it takes me to my usual screen to log on to my computer....

Two things that may be wrong here. You may have a power supply problem which requires a replacement and the other is a keyboard problem. Sometimes when the keyboard is defective, certain keys continue to be depressed and therefore forces the computer to process those commands. Therefore, slows down the computer.

Drivers for laptop sony vaio pcg9h4l problem:

If you were to log on to the manufacturer's web site, I think you will be pleasantly surprised as usually one is able to download, by model number, Customer Instruction Manuals, list of Dealers for spare part supplies and Driver downloads as required.

Just Google the manufacturer's name and follow the links. Make certain you are directed to the manufacturer's web site as some search engines direct you to other sites and they charge for the information that is normally free of charge.

I hope this helps.

Try going to and Download the following programs. Ccleaner Spybot S&D Malwarebytes AVG free edition
All of these should clean up your computer.
If it runs slow after that i suggest you upgrade the amount of RAM.
To do that you need to visit the manufacturer's website and search the model.

Sony Vaio VGN-FS980 is slow

Aside from hardware many things can slow up your PC:
  • If the C: drive is too full Windows is unable to allocate a proper virtual memory cache on the drive.
  • Your chosen anti-virus solution can even slow certain machines down (post what your running)
  • A high % of the time it is spyware/malware related
Just to make sure the machine is completely malware free you should download and run this program.

Slow performance

I am assuming that you have an antivirus program running, if not than get one. Than you should update it and than scan in safe mode ( that catches viruses before they load and hide from you) also purchase "Webroot Spy Sweeper" run it and follow instructions, and your computer should be running fasater, also if you upgrade your RAM, than that well boost preformance, upgrade your hard drive may also solve the problem. Chances that your processor is fried are slim, although vacuming out the fan also helps to cool the processor. If you wanted to, you could even add another fan.
