Support the Axle Assembly, remove the Bolts holding the Axle in the Carrier, and you will see the Bearing Assembly which is held in place by a large Spanner Nut which uses a Socket that looks like a Flower Pot with a couple of short teeth sticking out of it. I have Five of those things. You loosen the Spanner Nut and the Bearing Assembly will come out without too much effort.

How do i replace the rear axel bearings on a 1988 Chevrolet IROC Z28 Camaro


Put car in neutral, remove wheels, calipers and rotors, diff. cover. rotate carrier until you see wrist pin retaining bolt, remove bolt and slide out the wrist pin out of carrier. Next push axle inward to remove inner axle "C" retainer washer then slide axle out of tube. Then pry off axle seal and with slide hammer w/attachment remove axle bearing.

My 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 has a rear end roaring noise.


Change both axel bearings at the same time. The pinion bearing can be tested by slowly turning the drive shaft by hand and listening for any rough spots. It could be a carrier bearing or a bad U joint too. Isolate it by dropping the drive shaft and turning the pinion yoke by hand. If there is a problem, you'll be able it feel it. Then look at the drive shaft for worn carrier bearing and U joints.

Check the backlash in bearing shaft direction and the axle hub deviation. Maximum for backlash should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm) and for axle hub deviation 0.020 in. (0.05mm).

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:

    Hub on the carrier and tighten the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) No. 2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector using a screwdriver Rear axle into hub assembly No. 1 and 2 upper control arm assembly. Torque the new nut to the No. 2 rear upper control arm to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Temporarily tighten the No. 1 arm bolt. No. 1 and 2 rear suspension arm assembly. Temporarily tighten. Toe control link. Torque new nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Rear stabilizer link. Torque to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Parking brake assembly at the wheel hub Rear speed sensor Rear axle shaft nut. Torque to 214 ft. Lbs. (290 Nm) and stake the nut with a chisel and hammer. Rear brake disc and disc brake caliper
  2. Adjust the parking brake.
  3. Stabilize the suspension as follows :
    1. Install the wheel(s).
    2. Lower the vehicle and bounce it up and down several times to stabilize the rear suspension.
    3. Raise the vehicle.
    4. Remove the wheel.
    5. Jack up the rear lower suspension armplacing a wood block in between. Apply a load to the suspension so that the lower suspension arm is plkaced in a horizontal position.

  4. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear upper control arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).
  5. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear suspension arm assembly to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6. Fully tighten the No. 2 rear suspension arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).

    Rear tire and wheel assembly

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE If it is necessary to replace the hub or bearing, replace the components as an assembly.


    Rear tire and wheel assembly If equipped with rear disc brakes, the caliper mounting bolts. Leave the brake line connected and suspend the assembly out of the way. Brake rotor or drum 4 bolts and pull off the rear axle hub O-ring

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub on the carrier and tighten the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) Rotor or drum Caliper, f equipped with rear disc brakes and tighten the bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) Wheel

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Rear wheel(s) Height control sensor link from the lower control arm Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness Brake caliper bracket from the rear axle carrier by removing the 2 bolts. Support the caliper with a piece of wire. Brake rotor Parking brake shoes and cable Cotter pin, lock cap and the nut holding the halfshaft to the rear axle Suspension member brace by removing the 2 bolts Halfshaft bolts and washers Halfshaft from the vehicle Strut rod
  4. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body for the No. 1 control arm.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam Nut on the axle carrier side of the No. 1 lower control arm Separate the control arm from the axle carrier No. 1 lower control arm Stabilizer bar link from the No. 2 lower control arm.
  6. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam from the No. 2 lower control arm Nut and bolt holding the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier No. 2 control arm from the vehicle Nut and bolt on the lower side of the strut assembly 2 upper control arm set nuts and bolts Axle carrier with the upper control arm
  8. Secure the axle carrier in a vise.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut holding the upper control arm to the axle carrier and remove the control arm Dust deflector. Use a suitable prytool. Oil seal

  10. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts and shift the backing the plate towards the hub side (outside).
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    New bearing to the axle housing Snapring to the axle carrier, using snapring pliers New outer oil seal. Coat the oil seal lip with multipurpose grease.

(184 Nm) Parking brake shoes and cable Outboard joint side of the halfshaft and align the matchmarks on the side gear shaft and the halfshaft. Coat the threads with clean oil and install the hexagon bolts. Tighten bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm). Suspension member brace with the 2 bolts. Tighten the 2 bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Nut to hold the halfshaft to the rear axle. Tighten the nut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm). Lock cap and cotter pin Brake disc to the axle hub with the matchmarks aligned. Install the 2 screws and tighten the screws to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Brake caliper to the vehicle and install the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm). ABS speed sensor and wiring harness Height control sensor link with the matchmarks aligned. Tighten the nut to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Rear wheel(s) Negative battery cable

  2. Lower the vehicle and turn ON the air suspension switch.

Stabilizer Bar

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the 2 nuts and left stabilizer bar link. If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (5 mm) to hold the stud. Repeat for the right side.
  3. Remove the 8 bolts, 2 No. 1 brackets and 2 bushings. Two types of bolts are used, so make sure the correct bolts are installed.
  4. Remove the stabilizer bar.

To install:
  1. Install the stabilizer bar.
  2. Install the bushing and bracket with the 2 bolts and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). Install the bushing to the inner side of the bushing stopper on the stabilizer bar.
  3. Connect the stabilizer bar links and tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Repeat for the right side.
  4. Install the rear wheels.
  5. Inspect and adjust rear wheel alignment.

How to remove axel on 2002 cadillac deville


this procedure is for replacing the axle bearing, it has all the info u need to do whatever it is u are doing with the axle removed.

Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Axle puller
  • Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Set of ¼-inch drive sockets
  • ¼-inch drive ratchet
  • Hammer
  • Lug wrench
  • Tube of RTV silicone
  • 2 bottles of rear axle oil
  • Bucket
  1. Step 1 Raise and support the rear of the vehicle. Remove the wheels. Remove the rear cover on the third member or axle. Place the bucket under the rear to catch the fluid. Remove the brake drums if the vehicle has drum brakes.
  2. Step 2 Rotate the outside axle until the center carrier is in a position where the small 8 mm or ¼-inch bolt is at 7 o'clock and clear of the housing so that it can be removed. This is the bolt holding the center through pin that runs through both spider gears. Position the carrier so that when the bolt is removed, the pin can be dropped straight down without contacting the housing.
  3. Step 3 Remove the center pin and lay it in the cover with its retaining bolt. Do not rotate the carrier with the pin out, since the pin is what holds the spider gears in place. If the carrier is turned, the spider gears would need to be adjusted so that they line up again with the hole for the through pin.
  4. Step 4 Push both axles in toward the carrier. This is now possible because the through-pin has been removed. This will expose the C-clips that hold the axles from coming out of the carrier. Remove the C-clips with the needle nose pliers and lay them in the pan. Pull the axles out of the housing and stand them up.
  5. Step 5 Remove the outside axle bearings and seals with the axle puller. The axle puller has several ends of different sizes; pick the one that fits through the center of the bearing. The axle puller is a sliding hammer with a T-end that can swivel. When the puller end is inserted through the bearing, rotate it slightly to get the T-end to swivel up and grab the bearing. Using the slide hammer, hammer the bearing and seal out of the housing.
  6. Step 6 Clean the housing surface where the bearing will be seated. Place the new bearing into the housing as far as it will go, and make sure it goes in straight. Place the old bearing on top of the new bearing and hit it with the hammer to drive the new bearing in. Tap it on in a circular pattern and continue until there is a resounding difference in sound as the bearing contacts the lip in the axle (it will sound more solid). Remove the old bearing.
  7. Step 7 Install the seal by tapping it carefully on four corners, avoiding the rubber part of the seal, until it is seated. Do not bend the housing or it will leak.
  8. Step 8 Install the axles and push them in all the way. Insert the C-clips on the ends of the axles and pull the axles back out to seat the C-clips in the carrier. Insert the pin back into the carrier through the spider gears and install the small retaining bolt to keep the pin in.
  9. Step 9 Clean the face of the housing and the axle cover where the gasket material will seal. Use brake cleaner or alcohol to remove all the oil from the surface to be sealed. Smear some RTV silicone sealant on the axle cover around the edge in a continuous line about a quarter of an inch thick. Allow the cover to sit until the RTV silicone sealant cures to the point that it will not transfer to the fingers when touched. The proper terminology is when it "skins," or is still wet inside but starting to dry on the outside; this way it will stay in place.

Im workin on an 88 jeep, ive got instructions on how to do them by taking just the axle out and i got instructions on how to do it by taking the carrier, bearing assembly and axle out as a whole, i dont...


If I'm reading this right, I think you are attempting to remove the front axle and hub bearing? If so, there are three twelve point bolts that go through the knuckle from the backside. Loosen them up and back them out about 1/4" and put a socket you will never use again on each one and hammer on it (move it from one side to another so the bearing comes out straight). If you are working on the right front and there is a vacuum control box on the axle tube, it needs to be removed. Use lots of wd40 around the bearing to help get it out.
Can't remember the axle nut size (somewhere around 1 1/16 or 1 1/4") It is torqued to about 175lbs and is a real bear to get off once it's out unless you know someone that has a 3/4 drive air gun. I generally take it off first using a 5 foot bar over a breaker bar that has no flex joint on it,with the wheel on, center cap removed on the ground.
If I read your post wrong, don't rate my answer...a carrier is the center section (ring gear etc.) so your post is a bit confusing..

there are two main designs. One uses a bearing and flange at the backing plate area, release that and you can pull the axle and bearing.

the Other design is call a c lock axle. Inside the carrier, there are 4 spider gears. Two are splined to the alxes and two idle on an idler shaft. Remove this shaft, and then you can push the axle shaft inwards about an inch or so.

this will allow you to remove the c shaped retainer that is engauged with a groove at the inboard end of the axle.

So, now the bad news: often the c lock axle uses the axle shaft itself and the inside bearing race...which means if the bearing has failed, you need to replace the axle also.... Inspect carefully. Metal temper is the issue and once that is comprimised, you need to replace.

Rear bearing


rear axle bearings I assume? Pull the diff cover, rotate the carrier so you can remove the pin from the center of the 4 spyder gears, push the axle in slightly, and remove large c clip from the carrier area. The axle will pull right out! These vehicles are hard on axle bearings. Look them all over.

How to remove carrier bearing


U must remove the axles, to do this pull the diff cover off, then remove the pin that retains the large center pin that is between the spider gears, pull the axles out far enough to clear diff carrier, remove left and right carrier bearing caps, mark the adjustment sims and caps (very important) as to which side they came from, u will most likely need to have a press to remove and install the new carrier bearings, they are pressed on, when u reinstall put the shims back in with a brass hammer or large brass drift punch, they are cast iron and break very easily, make sure to use the proper gear lube, do not overfill, also replace the axle seals and check the axle bearings for wear, I will bet they are worn out as well, the rule really is that if one bearing goes south then the metal from that will ruin the rest of the bearings, in the shop we recommend all differential bearings be done, if not we can't guarantee the job.
