    You can also:
    Windows
    XP

    If Windows
    XP

is the only operating system installed on your computer, booting
into Safe Mode with these instructions.

    • If the
computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power

    • Wait 30
seconds, and then turn the computer on.

    • Start
tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you
begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard
error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.

    • Ensure
that the Safe mode option is selected.

    • Press
Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

    • When you
are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart
the computer as you normally would.

    To use the
    System Configuration Utility method

    • Close
      all open programs.

    • Click
Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK

    • The
System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the
"/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when
      prompted.

    • The
      computer restarts in Safe mode.

    • Perform
the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.

When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG
again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK
      to restart your computer
    Windows Vista

    Windows
Vista is similar to Windows XP for starting in Safe Mode.

    • Turn the
computer on or Restart the computer

    • Start
tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu appears. If
      you
begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard
error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.

    • Ensure
that the Safe mode option is selected (the top option)

    • Press
Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

    • When you
are finished with troubleshooting, close all programs and restart
the computer as you normally would.

What do you mean not working? Is it that certain keys don't work, or the whole keyboard does not work?

Maybe your keyboard has been hijacked by a virus. Have you tried booting up in Safe Mode to see if it works?

INSPIRON 640M WILL NOT GO INTO SAFE MODE , IT GIVES OPTIONS BUT NONE OF THEM WORK , THEN IT GOES TO THE BLANK SCREEN.

Try going to safe mode manually. The steps mentioned below will help you accessing the safe mode

Step 1: Shut down your PC completely.
Step 2: Turn on the Power button.
Step 3: As soon as you turn it on start hitting the F8 key on your keyboard until you get to a black screen called "Windows Advanced option". (If you don't get to that that screen but you end up reaching the blue screen than that means you have delayed in hitting the F8 key. start again from step 1.)
Step 4: As soon as you reach "Windows Advanced option" use your down arrow keys to choose an option called "Safe Mode/Safe mode with networking".
Step 5: Select that and HIT ENTER.

How do you get your computer into safe mode

As your computer goes through booting screens keep tapping the F8 Key. This will get you into a menu that will let you select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with networking.

Apr 06, 2009 | HP Computers & Internet

Undoing the "safe mode"

Yes, you should be able to reboot and it should automatically go back into regular mode.

If it doesn't, upon the next reboot tap the F8 key after your computer starts. A menu should appear with safe mode and start windows normally. Select the normal option. If a "boot menu" appears, select the hard drive, press enter then immediately hit the F8 key again for that menu although it should just reboot right into regular mode.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution with a fixya rating.
