Question about Sharp EL-738 Scientific Calculator

# Hi, Can the Sharp EL738 (=EL735S) calculate the log of a number, given its base? For example, log base 3 of 9 should give an answer of 2. What buttons to use?

Yes look you can't enter the base in calculators it's default 10 so use:
log x base y = log x / log y
log (x*y) = log x + log y
log (x/y) = log x - log y
so instead of log 8 base 2 input log 8 / log 2 it's easy

I would be interested in knowing the model number of the Casio calculator that can do prime factorization. I know and own several Casios (scientific and graphing) calculators and I have not found one that does it. Some graphing calculators are able to perform the factorization with the help of an additional program.

Calculate the log (base 10) of the number, then divide the result by the log (base 10) of the base.
For example, to calculate the base-3 log of 9, calculate the log of 9 to get 0.954 . Divide that by the log of 3 (about 0.477) to get 2.0 .
Since 9 is 3 squared, the log base 3 of 9 is 2, as we just calculated.

Your result is for the 6.75% interest compounded monthly. The problem states that the interest is compounded semiannually. This makes a difference in the effective interest rate.

A 6.75% APR compounded semiannually gives an effective interest rate of about 6.864%:
Press 2 , 6 . 7 5 2nd >EFF

Converting this to APR gives about 6.657%:
Press 1 2 , 6 . 8 6 4 2nd >APR

If you use 6.657 for the interest rate instead of 6.75 you should get the correct result.

for log base 10 use the the "log" key

example :

log(2) + log(3) = log(6)

enter 2 press the log key you will get 0.30102999 press the '+" key than 3 log you should get 0.47712125 for it Press the "=" or enter and you should get 0.778151250 for a answer than press inv or 2nd log and you should get 6 for a answer

It's 2*3=6 but about the base, you can't change it in the calculators the default base it's 10 so log x it's Logbase 10^x here some logs:

log x base y = log x / log y
log (x*y) = log x + log y
log (x/y) = log x - log y
in your example log 9 base 3 = log 9 / log 3 etc.

In any scientific calculator log2(n) can be  calculated with either ln or log function as follows

Log2(n)= ln(n) / ln(2)

Or
Log2(n)=log(n) / log(2)

both will give nearly the same answers
