If you have personally, or had someone else, modify the firmware on your console's DVD-ROM drive to play burnt games, you will need to restore the drive to its stock firmware and then finish the update through that. You can then reflash the DVD-ROM as desired to play any new games you wish.

If you have not modified your Xbox 360's DVD-ROM drive, then it is likely that your console either has a DVD-ROM that is failing, or it is simply having trouble putting the DVD-ROM into flash-ready mode to accept the update. To attempt to fix this error, eject the DVD-ROM tray and then pull the power cord out of the console, thus preventing it from automatically injecting the tray. Next, push the tray in about half way, with about a finger's width of room between the console's shell, and the apex of the curve in the hollow center of the DVD-ROM tray. Then, plug in the console and power it up while holding the tray in that position to prevent the console from injecting it automatically. Expect resistance, but it will eventually give up trying to move the tray. From there, you can release the tray and allow it to update as usual. Do not inject the tray by hand, let the console reset the tray on its own after it finishes updating. That should fix your problem if that was the specific problem causing the error. Either way, good luck, and I hope your error is resolved.

I tried following the steps for resetting the modem/router, checking the ports, etc. when testing live connection, it says network connected, internet connected, but while trying to connect to live is when it says update needed and then won't download. xbox had been working fine until 2 days ago it froze. reset console and when it turned back on EVERYTHING had been deleted somehow and error started...

If you download the update directly from Microsoft at you should not have any problem. Just use either a FAT32 formatted USB stick with the USB package, or burn a DVD or CD with the CD image provided on the same link. If you plan to burn a disk, I recommend on downloading and using imgburn from and using that, as it is much better than most alternative disk burning applications, and it's free.

and as i stated, until 3 days ago everything was working fine. it froze, we reset the console and everything was gone and we started getting prompted to update and all of the errors started. i am at my end with this,,,,, please someone help

Try the same USB update again, but this time, remove the hard drive from the Xbox 360 unit first. If the update completes successfully without your hard drive attached, that can narrow your problem down to a hard drive issue. If it doesn't detect an update at all with the hard drive missing, then a corrupted avatar update comes to mind. If the avatar update is corrupted, you cannot play online either and the console will prompt for an update. You must clear the console's cache, to be safe, and delete the corrupted avatar update from within the storage managment menu should this be the problem. The biggest clue to this being the error is if your acconuts do not have their avatars loaded when you sign into them.

Also, as you said that all of your data was deleted upon rebooting the console, that too is aiming toward a hard drive error. Your console's hard drive may be on the verge of failing, which would explain the inability to download updates, and the fact that you have lost all of your data.

would that still be the case if the console didn't come with the extra hard drive and only has the internal memory? I spent 3 hours with microsoft tech support and they just sd they had no idea after having me retry all the steps listed on the support page for xbox. I'm at my whits end with this. there are no avatars because all of the profiles were deleted also. when I say everything, I mean it was as if the internal memory had been completely reformatted and there was NOTHING and just starting from scratch. still have the guide and can play games offline but anything dealing with xbox live, internet, profiles, gamertags....GONE

  • Wesley Savoie Apr 25, 2014

There's a few possibilities for that case. First, the internal memory unit, if running on a first-generation Slim Xbox 360 console (code name Trinity), may have been dislodged or may be failing. This would cause the problems you're experiencing. My advice would be to check the storage screen in the System Settings menu of your Xbox 360 to make sure that there is a memory device listed other than "Cloud Storage". If none are listed, then your internal memory has likely failed. At that point, I would advise on picking up a USB memory unit and plugging that into the console. Make sure there's nothing on it first, as this will format the usb stick and, thus, delete all the data. Next, go to the same System Settings page and enter the Storage tab again. Your USB storage unit should show up and be in need of setting up. Simply set up the unit in the way described in the following articles.

Hopefully those resources can help you find at least a temperory solution to your problem. I would advise on purchasing an official (or spoofed, if you can discover how) Xbox 360 hard drive in the future though, as they are easier to manage and are overall considerably faster storage.

would that possibly be WHY we cannot upload/download the update and access xbox live?

  • Wesley Savoie May 01, 2014

Yes, if you have no operable system storage, you cannot store any data. That would include Profiles, Updates, Games, etc. You must have an operable system storage device to use any of those features.

SOURCE: error code 3151-335A-B800-0F00-C000-0059 whilst trying

That code means your dvd drive is reporting wrong codes towards the update. Your DVD drive must be re-flashed manually in order to finish the update.

Status code 416B-0000-3080-0508-8007-2F76 appears when updating

The first thing I would try is to go to system, storage then select hard drive, press left bumper, right bumper, then X, do this twice and then yes to update. This deletes the old update and tries to replace it with the new update. If this fails there is an alternative method - You first need a flash drive/memory stick that has got FAT32 file system (just in case you don't how to find out this info) with drive inserted to laptop/pc go into windows explorer and right click on the memory stick and go to properties you can then view the system type i.e. NTFS, FAT32.

Once sorted go to the Xbox Support website then select Xbox360 - System - System Update then select How To Get A New Xbox 360 Update last option to pick is Copy To A USB Flash Drive.

Save the file to your laptop/PC, once completed unzip the file and copy the folder to the flash drive how it was unzipped, plug the flash drive into the Xbox and switch it off. Once the 360 starts back up it looks at the flash drive and installs the new update. Once completed you can remove the flash drive and carry on playing!!
