SOURCE: needle always stops in up position

I have the Activa 131 and while the needle is made to stop in the up position, all you have to do is push the bottom of the peddle quickly with your heel and the needle goes into the material and stays until you start sewing again. Hope this is helpful.

SOURCE: Bernina 730 Can't open top cover !

The problem is that of a stuck piston detent on the pattern selector support that snaps the top cover closed.

  1. Open the light cover
  2. Apply pressure with thumbs on the bottom edge of the top cover on both the right and left sides of the cover. The cover should pop up...Too much pressure on the left side, (if this thing is really stuck) and you might break the top cover at the thread tension slot. Be careful here....
  3. Add a drop of acetone (fingernail polish remover) to the piston detent and work it free by pushing it back and forth. Avoid getting any acetone on the painted surfaces of the machine.
  4. Continue to work free, repeating with a few drops of acetone, and wipe clean. Don't oil this part. It was a petroleum product combined with a galvanic process (aluminum and steel) that caused the problem in the first place, not to mention age.
  5. Use DTE Heavy Medium oil rather than a white or clear oil when you lubricate your machine. White oils are unstable and will oxidize (decay) much more quickly. Also avoid 3 in 1 oil and stuff like WD40....very bad....
  6. Oil 1/2 a drop on those prescribed areas. Too much oil is more harmful than not enough....
  7. Contact your Bernina dealer for this oil.

It does not matter where the position of the camstack is when you put it in, it should not affect any other part of the machine.

Assuming this is the older mechanical Bernina 730 Record (not the new computerized model)...Sounds like your machine is seized due to dried oil.

Bernina 1630 Can't adjust stitch length - any ideas.

Hm, the 1630's are still mechanical machines with some electronics, right? Could be the mechanics have seized due to old oil solidifying and preventing things from moving like they should. This is the method I've used on completely mechanical Berninas that have seized. (Use caution in not getting oil on the computer components!)

Stitch selector knob on bernina 600, not Deco, is stuck and cannot select needle position, However the width of stitch part of the knob is working. This knob has 2 parts, needle position and width control

Your machine (Bernina 600 Record) has most likely frozen (seized) due to lack of regular maintenance. Don't panic. It can be fixed with a lot of elbow grease, good quality oil and a hairdryer. The following method has resurrected several Berninas I've picked up as "nonworking."

My Bernina 830 sewing machine will not do a zigzag stich

We are assuming that the zigzag width dial is at the widest position but the needle will not move laterally for zigzag... The following logic should be applied for Bernina machines 530, 730, 830, 930 machines with a guided motion zigzag cam.
----------------------
1. The switching pawl (lever on the top cover that switches from zigzag to cam patterns) may be engaged in the cam or automatic pattern side. Check that first.
For zigzag application, the lever must be engaged in the zigzag side (lever pulled back toward the operator). The stitch width dial is then used to provide your choice of width.
----------------------
2. It is common, due to oil varnishes, that the switching pawl that is actuated by this lever is stuck between the zigzag and the automatic position, thus preventing the transmission of power to either the zigzag cam or the automatic pattern cams and to the needle.
The best way to detect this is to remove the top cover. You can then switch the lever back and forth to observe if the switching pawl engages firmly into either of the receiving forks. If the switching pawl is sticking, a few drops of certain solvents are applied by a technician on the switching pawl support. The switch lever can be rapidly switched back and forth until you see the switching pawl engage into the receiving forks and you hear a crisp clicking during each engagement. This repair can be permanent or it may create only a temporary fix due to the amount of oil varnishes on the parts.
If the machine is heavily varnished, it suggested that the parts be disassembled and cleaned for flawless performance. If the machine had been sprayed with WD-40, petroleum based solvents like mineral spirits will not break down these varnishes.
A caution regarding solvents...DO NOT USE (WD-40) as your solvent. WD-40 is a marvelous product for its intended application as a water displacement device. It is not to be used for lubricating a sewing machine. Note: "Bernina Technical Information bulletin #1" issued in 1982, forbade the use of such spray lubricants and solvents. SewTechnical Home

How do I keep the walking foot from unscrewing the needle holder on my bernina record 730

Tighten your needle with a screwdriver, instead of finger tight. If that continues to happen, take your walking foot back. That is not normal, and could end up injuring you or damaging your machine. Good luck!

I don't know about bernina but I will take a shot at your problem. Make sure your needle is inserted in the needle arm with the flat part of the needle facing away from you. After it is for sure inserted in the crack in the arm tighten the needle down firmly. If the needle is backwards it will continue to come out. Your machine might sew but it will possibly make noise when the needle is in the down position. The problem isn't the walking foot.

Bernina 730 just got and has been sitting for years. belt squeals and needle positioning loose.... What can I do to fix this?

If the needle lateral position is loose (zig-zag), the usual candidate is the position adjusting cam which is a small knurled knob on the right-hand-side of the needle bar and just visible below the sewing arm. It is secured in place by a small screw, but it also needs to ****-up against the control arm that comes out of the main mechanism very snugly otherwise you get alot of movement in the linkage. If not used/maintained for a long time, this positioning cam almost-invariably gets seized as well, so it tends to be a bit fiddly, mainly because of where it is. I usually have to resort to removing the needle bar as well, which has its own problems, so it's not really a job for the amateur. Belt noise is usually worse with the pale brown toothed type and, dare I say it, a VERY slight rub along the a small section of both edges with a piece of solid soap very often will quieten a very noisy belt down, but PLEASE dont overdo it ... you really dont want to contaminate the Vee groove with a big wad of mums bath soap ... wont do the machine any good at all !!!
