SOURCE: garmin gps 12 wont turn on.
Sorry to hear of the dead units. Are you using the correct power cable with a small hole in the centre of the plug? The GPS 12 is strictly limited to 7 volts only. The accessory cigarette lighter cable for this model has a circuit inside to drop the voltage from 12 to 7. Cannot be fixed. There would have been a plastic peg in the back of the GPS socket to prevent anything but the correct voltage Garmin cable being plugged in. Unfortunately these pegs are easily broken off. Yes, they are a good little unit even though well on in years. The next model up - the 12XL - can accept a wide voltage range and does not have the plastic peg.
All the best, Tony at KiwiGPS.

If you haven't used the gps for a while they can try to operate with the incorrect catalog or time. Unless these are both correct it gets lost. Usually you can correct this with a forced reset. There is also a update for this unit which also forces the update.
The data cable sort of screws on and makes contact with 4 pins. This is the little round connector. It does both power and data. The cable is a wee bit pricey from Garmin but you can make them or just get one from ebay.
The reset usually wipes out any saved routes poi's etc so using the data cable will save all of those. To reset the 12 I believe you hold the lower right corner of the screen and then power it on to reset. Then you need to let it rub until it gets the new data which can take 5-50 minutes. Makes sure your batteries are good.
I'd recommend the data cable route (use a 'gasp' non garmin cheap cable) and upload the update at the same time and you should be good to go try and get lost again.

SOURCE: turn on my garmin, starts
This problem occurs due to two reason.
1)corrupted firmware.Just reset it.
The reset button is very hard to see. It is to the right of the serial number, hidden under the plastic membrane and labeled in subdued print. I had to use a flashlight to find it. Just use a pointed object like a pen to press down on the printed square while holding the power switch to the right. My unit came back on after a few seconds.
2)Change the battery. It is inside it.
Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.
Thank you for using fixya have a nice day:-)
