Vizio e421va picture going black

Vizio picture shows on screen at power up but then screen goes to mostly black with sometimes vertical lines (like interference or something. Mfg date Oct 2010. serial LTLNIBCL4200972. I can see the uverse menu at the very top behind the black but it is like someone holding a black sheet across it so I can't read the menu. Have the back off, only 3 boards. Nothing obvious to me on the boards, but that is not my area of expertise.

I think I got it working, at least temporarily. I do think something is going out but it looks like it is going to be intermitent. This is the 2nd time it happened when I turned the set on in the last couple months. I finally plugged in a dvd player and messed with it until I could get enough picture to be able to see the menu and reset factory defaults. so far I have picture. but question now is, if it goes out again, which board is the likely culpret?

It was a temporary fix. I still need to figure out what board is going out. Looks like if the tv is off for a long weekend....it happens. I get black screen (Except for at the top) and I have to mess with it. Once warmed up I can sometimes get the picture back. but it is struggles with horizontal split screens etc. But when it comes back it stays on.

I included 2 pictures. One is with the menu on, it drags white lines down. The other is when I almost got the picture back. there was a horizontal break which was moving at different speeds it seemed. sometimes freezing. it eventually works itself out. But something is definately going out.

POSSIBLY T-con pcb, but check the cables between the T-con & the panel & the cables between the t-con & main pcb.
Try unplugging & reconnecting those same cable links. When disconnected look at the condition of the cables & boards. your looking for signs of arcing or corrosion.

SOURCE: Vertical Black Line

HI,
First thing to do is the reset and the whacking test. I give this a 50/50 chance of clearing it up.

ONE: Disconnect the power cord for 4 hours. Then when you power it back up the internal soft codes will automatically reset to factory defaults.

TWO: The whacking test is to just bang or smack the set with your hand on the back, side, top, etc., to see if there are loose connections or cold solder joints inside that are acting up. If so, the banging should knock them back to normal and the set should restore. You might have to use some creative banging and some have had to put a book or magazine under one corner to torque the chassis enough to get it to work reliably.

If these two procedures do nothing then:

The manual always knows the best.Go through the manual carefully and u will find the solution to ur problem..

Goodluck and Kind Regards

It can be main board, T-CON, or LCD panel. I would try reseating the ribbon cables between the T-CON and the LCD panel first.Unless you have service manual and scope to look at the signals it will be difficult to be 100% for sure as to which board is bad, the repair guy will more likely to do board swapping, starting with the T-CON board.

SOURCE: I have a Vizio LCD

Hi, vertical lines when the television is on may be related to issues with the television's screen resolution. Resolutions set higher than 1280 by 720 can create visual disturbances on the screen. You can reset the resolution through the control panel's display settings menu. This should correct the issue immediately, although you may need to power the television off and then on again in some cases..

You will have get to the T-CON board assembly which can be difficult and reset the ribbon cables between the T-CON board and the LCD panel, if you have never work or repair LCD TV before, you can really do bad damage to the TV. The T-CON board itself can be bad. You should go here and learn about it first.

How do I fix my Vizio TV model E421VA? Details are below. It has a black screen and no audio.

Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.
Before going further; try a hard reset first. If it does not help you, replace the main digital board. There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; visit the site linked here.

Sony kv35s66: No picture, just sound and red blinking

The most common problem (I have fixed lots) is the Vertical amplifier has developed a loose connection. It probably just needs resoldering. As things expand it makes and looses connection you picture goes in and out. The vertical chip is a large black chip that gets hot, over time it degrades the solder until a connection is damaged. Most newer sets have a protection circuit that senses the lack of height, and shuts down the picture tube to save it. When the picture dropped to a line on older TVs and left that way too long it would burn a line into the face of the picture tube. You then had to have the picture tube replaced along with the vertical amp. it's kinda like a screensaver for your TV.
