I don't think Fixya is the correct place to look for that information. If the weapon was registered then the owner might be able to find that out at the local police station. Other that than that I really don't think your going to have any luck.

I inherited a gun frame (no barrel) with obliterated serial numbers. Can I legally re-barrel it and use it?

No you cannot rebarrel it legally as the serial numbers have been destroyed which will be looked at as suspicious (why was the numbers removed stolen or criminal use and no barrel may mean a crime attached to it )
It is a federal crime to possess a firearm with an obliterated serial number in the united states
Or more precisely get caught/ found with one

Trying find out what type of gun this is serial number is 0101877

Guns usually have the stamp of the brand or make in the steel part of it, if you can see a serial number but no make I would take it to a gun shop and see if the thing was not made at home by someone and could be piecd together and be leary of the safety of it. good luck.

My gun was stolen last week i dont have serial numbers how do i obtain numbers so my insurance will cover the loss

Hi Melinda:
If you obtained the gun legally, the serial numbers should have been recorded on the bill of sale. Depending on how long you have had it, the store that you bought it from may have aa copy of the invoice if you cannot locate yours.
I suggest that you contact them to see if the information is available.

My gun was stolen last week.i dont have serial numbers.how do i obtain numbers so my insurance will cover it

What type of gun is it, shotgun, handgun, rifle, and did you purchase the gun new from a gun store or retail store? Laws vary state to state about registration. I live in Alabama and I can purchase a shotgun or hunting rifle from say walmart or AcademySSports with no registration. If you purchased from a retailer or gun store and know approximate date of purchase. The retailer can pull purchase by date and should be able to provide you with the serial number.

How do I search for a gun using the serial number

Follow these five steps:
    • 1 Locate the serial number for the gun you want to check. If you are purchasing a gun or checking one that is already in your possession, you can check the documentation that came with the gun. In many cases, the serial number will be noted in the owner's manual. If you don't have the owner's manual you will need to locate the serial number on the body of the gun. The serial number is usually located on the handle or inside the gun, but this does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
    • 2 Contact a reputable gun dealer in your area and ask them to run a serial number search for you if you're looking to buy a gun from a private party. In most cases, the dealer will charge you a small fee for this service. However, this is often the fastest, simplest method. Many gun dealers will be able to give you basic records about where and when the gun was registered.
    • 3 Check your local department of law enforcement's website to see if you can run an online gun serial number search. Some states do not maintain a database that individuals can access, so this method may not work in all areas. If you can't find the database, contact a law enforcement representative and ask if an online gun serial number search can be performed in your state.
    • 4 Contact your local police department or sheriff's office to run a gun serial number search if you are looking to purchase a pre-owned gun from a dealer. Police records will indicate whether the gun has been used in a crime or has been reported lost or stolen. Checking the serial number with the police department or sheriff's office is beneficial if you're considering buying a gun from a dealer because they can quickly check whether a gun was used for a crime or reported stolen in all states using the national ATF database.
    • 5 Check the Gun Verify database if you are purchasing a pre-owned firearm from a dealer or individual to make sure that it is not stolen. Gun Verify is a user-based database, meaning gun owners input their own information if their gun is lost or stolen.

How can i find out if my pistol is stolen

If you have obtained a pistol from someone and you are trying to find out if its stolen, the only way to do this is to call your local police or sheriffs department and explain what you are wanting to do and they might send out an officer and run it the serial number on the ncic and check it. Stolen guns that was reported and entered into the ncic stays active forever as stolen til recovered. If you do this and it comes back stolen, be prepared to have to turn over your weapon to the police but dont be surprised if they question you as to where or how you obtained it.

Bmx serial numbers...... How do I find out if the bike I just bought for 40 bucks is stolen?

Usually there will be a bike shop sticker on it, if so, call them and they can tell you who owns the bike by the serial number. No sticker, check the phone book and find out what shops sell that brand. (At least, that is how we do it, we save every serial number for our customers and sometimes we know the bike was stolen before our customer because the police call us). If there is no sticker, call the police dept and ask if someone has reported one missing or look in the paper. Other than that, I don't know of any more ideas.

Where can i find the serial number for a gun

Serial number postings on firearms vary by manufacturer. Check makers website for locations. Older or antique guns may not have one. Of course
there is always a chance someone may have eliminated it but there should be some evidence of that. A respectable gun dealer shouldn't charge you to take a look at it.
