When accessing the scanner with Elements 6, I receive the following messages: "Nikon Scan was unable to find any active devices" and "could not open the Twain source"

The scanner and the driver CD predates Vista and this download worked well with XP. Do you have any other suggestions?

  • hdirks Jun 18, 2009

Because the driver CD predates Vista, I presume that they are not compatable. Do you know where and how I can acquire the proper updated drivers?

The drivers are most likely not installed properly, you can try reinstalling from the cd, may not work if it was made before Vista.

Recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Where can I get correct drivers to run with my Nikon Super Coolscan slide scanner LS-4000 ED model. I have Nikon Scan 3.0 twain software. Stu Milligan

Hello there.
This will help you if you have 64-bit Windows 7, because officially, there is not windows 7 64 bit driver.
Just read and do everything.
Otherwise, if you have windows 7 32bit click here:
To check bits, go right click on My Computer, Properties, and you will see it.

Download the Nikon scan application here: Nikon Scan

There is also a firmware update for this model. After installing the Nicon Scan software that includes the scanner driver (ensure that scanner is recognized), do the firmware update.
Follow instructions on site and do not interrupt firmware update procedure, or that may damage the scanner.

you must perform a p.o.s.t. reset. That is:
1) switch off the scanner
2) swithc off the PC
3) disconnect scanner from PC
5) remove the dia/film adapter
6) switch on tyhe scanner and wait untill it booted
7)insert the film/dia adapter
8) connect scanner and PC

Trying to install Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED, for some reason the installation disc doesn't have the LS-5000 ED driver software...? I am running Win Vista. Any ideas?

I do not believe Nikon made drivers specifically for Vista, but you can use the solution here to make your own driver "inf" file and install some that will work anyway. Please read this and carefully follow the directions. If you are using 32 bit, use the 32 bit drivers. If 64 bit, then 64 bit drivers, when creating the new inf.

I had the same problem with my Coolscan IV. The problem ended up being the scanner, which had several broken pieces in it when it arrived. Since the Nikon repair facility in Las Angles wanted $200 plus parts to look at it and repair it, I subsequently purchased a Coolscan V and went to the Nikon site and downloaded their latest drivers (ns403en_vista.exe) - which worked (works) fine and does a beautiful job. If you follow this route, make sure that you download the correct version, i.e., the Vista version. I have been able to make the scanner work well using both the XP and the Vista Nikon drivers, since I have both an older XP desktop and a new Vista Laptop. Good Luck.
