Hi, I have solved it, I hope. I took out the bobbin and us clicked the bobbin holder and reinserted it. There wasn't a thread jam but I think something had moved out of place. Thanks for your help

Hai, I think your machine timing is changed. So you can't sewing properly. Please check the timing and put the oil everyday all oil parts properly.

What did it end up being? I had the same issue with my machine today. It happened for no apparent reason, while.I was in the middle of a stitch. I was sewing with "minky" for the first time, so I assumed the fuzz had clogged up the machine, so I removed the plate and cleaned beneath the bobbin area, and it seemed to be working again. I sewed 2 sides of a blanket and the problem resumed. I repeated the steps I'd taken before, but can't get it functioning normally.
I can crank the hand wheel (not loaded with thread) once or twice and it moves freely, but as I turn a couple more times, it gets tighter and tighter until it won't move.

What's the deal? I'm so frustrated!

SOURCE: why is my singer SEWING MACHINE prelude HAND WHEEL RESISTING

Make sure the bobbin winder is in the position away from the bobbin stopper. When you fill a bobbin, you have to push the "spindle" towards the handwheel. If you do not push the "spindle" back into position (away from the handwheel), the wheel will remain locked.

My needle will not go up and down

hi Tamara.
you have not said the make or model.but try this.
Make sure the push your bobbin winder to the right then to the left and see if that solves the problem. Your Old Machine has a Clutch & It Needs to be Released. The Clutch is this little dial that is inside of the hand wheel. In older machines, it was used to wind the bobbin without the needle going up and down.17 Jul 2015

Why doesn't it sew?

Check to see if the bobbin case is in correctly. Jamming occurs when something isn't in machine properly. Try taking out the needle & manually turning the hand wheel slowly. It could be just a bent needle too.

Why is the wheel on the right hand side of my machine very stiff when turning

the "hand wheel" on a sewing machine is meant to only advance the mechanism far enough to thread and set the needle , the motor should be used to run the machine else wise , as its turning every thing inside the machine to keep all the functions in "TimE" as models increase in there complexity there hand wheels are harder to move as more stuff needs to be kept in "time" now , also on some models the bobbin winder is directly powered by the hand wheel , if its not in use it should be disengaged completely

Oily cotton when stitching

Oily Cotton:
1. Remove the bobbin case.
2. Wipe out the oil.
3. Bobbin case rides unto an area that looks like a race track. (Called Race). Wipe out oil.
4. After cleaning oil out take a drop and place unto race.
5. Replace bobbin. (Wipe oil if there is any.)
6. Remove oil from the needle arm. (Goes up and down holding unto the needle.)
7. Replace a small amount of oil on the needle arm.
The sewing the machine should sew very well. It may have some resistance when you turn the hand wheel by hand. Likely, this is due to the machine being new and not being broke in. Otherwise, it would need to be lubricated throughout the machine. Give it while!

Motor is fine, but won't sew

since the machine has been setting for 20 years, it needs to be serviced
the old grease & oil have probably turned the gunk. the servicing can also tell if any parts are damaged

Singer 401a - hand wheel will not move needle except to hand crank

Make sure the lock is tight. If it is even slightly loose, the wheel will spin without moving the needle.

My hand wheel turns and my needle stops even thou I have it turned so that it should sew. I will be sewing along and all of a sudden the hand wheel starts turning.

If this is an older machine that the motor drives the hand wheel with a belt, then look at what holds the wheel to the interior shaft (a bolt, screw, or friction knob that releases the interior shaft to allow winding a bobbin). Hope this helps!

Hand wheel spins without moving the needle

I used to have an old Bernina that had an inner and outer hand wheel. Loosening the inner wheel disconnected the needle bar from the motor so you could wind the bobbin without running the needle up and down. It sounds to me like your machine has the same feature, but resistance on the needle makes the inner wheel loosen up. I don't know whether wrenching on it as tight as you can would be enough, or whether this is a symptom indicating that there is something loose internally in the connection between the inner and outer wheels. Good luck!
