Look in the oven, the cake may be burning. If the smell is from the mixer it could be a capacitor burning out, it could be a fault on the PCB, it could be a poor connection in the wiring, it could be a faulty armature, it could be faulty field windings, it could be a bush or bearing nipping up. the smell will be burning insulation on the windings of the motor probably from the brushes being too short and arcing on the armature thereby overheating the motor. suggest you take it to an appliance repair shop for quote on repairs.
it is probably the swich /pot combination on the electronic board. The shaft on the unit I have had twisted off and would no longer turn the switch on or off.
