Question about Sylvania SRDV495

16x DVD-R I received an upgrade to 8X, and it worked. I have a lot of 16X DVDs, Is there an upgrade so I can record on these Disks? The speed to record is not crucial as long as I can use the 16X.        Thanks,                       "General Lee" E-Mail-generallee45@hughes.net

My model writes fine on 8xDVD-R. I did not need to upgrade as the version I have was purchased that way. I would like to know if there is an upgrade to 16x. Thank you.

Are there any updates concerning the speed of dvd recordings? Mine is still only 8x and it's hard to find 8x -R/-RW dvds.

They probably will not go up because dvd recording is being replaced by dvr. You can use 16x on your recorder. That is fine. It will still record at 8x, but 16x will work fine.

I can't record with my DVD player on 1x-16x DVDs

This unit is too old and too basic to handle 16x speed. However, there is a firmware update for this model DVD/VCR to record on 8x.

All you have to do is call the toll-free number in your manual and request it. They will send you an update disc.

Here is the basic procedure after you receive the update disc:

1. Turn on your TV and your combo unit. The tray should be closed. The unit must be in DVD mode.

2. Quickly press the sequence CM Skip, 6, 5, 4 (This will switch it into firmware update mode. The tray will eject automatically.)

3. Insert the disc and push the tray back in.

4. The update will begin. It will take approx. 2-3 minutes. It will tell you when it is complete and eject the tray.

5. When it is done, remove the disc, but DO NOT close the tray. It will go back in later. Turn the power off.

6. Wait a few minutes and when the tray goes back in wait about another 10 seconds and then you may turn the unit back on.

Firmware update procedure is now completed.

Cannot record on 16X DVD-R

You will need to call Funai 1 800 605 8457 give them your brand / model number and expose your problem - they should be able to send you an upgrade disc but it will cost you -
If you want my advice - you DO NOT need a 16x disc inside a DVD recorder - the optical drives used on DVD recorders and even worse a Funai drive are quite bad as it is in terms of writing strats for higher speeds - you are better off recording at 8x on a 16x disc.this will provide better burns ( lower PIE/PIF errors and jitter %).

Acer aspire 6920 18.4 inch screen! I cant get blue ray dvds

According to the ACER Aspire 6920 specs, it does not have a Blue-ray player only DVD CD R/W drive. Therefore it cannot play blue-ray movie disks.
The specs of the DVD drive are as follows :-
Optical Storage
  • Type DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM - Integrated
  • CD / DVD read speed 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD±R) / 6x (DVD±R DL)
  • CD / DVD write speed 16x (CD) / 8x (DVD±R) / 4x (DVD±R DL)
  • CD / DVD rewrite speed 16x (CD) / 6x (DVD-RW) / 8x (DVD+RW) / 5x (DVD-RAM)

Using up to 16x disks

This units DVD drive is only able to spin at a max of 8x on DVD-Rs and max of 2x on DVD-RWs. Also, this unit is a - only recorder. This means if it is a +, it's not going to work.
Since the unit is a DVD-R 4x max recorder, the unit will need to have it's firmware upgraded. This will only help to record to a DVD-R 8x. You can purchase this upgrade with the manufacture of the unit. Call the 1-800 number listed in your manual and press 3. They will walk you thru the steps to find out which upgrade is needed.

DVD Recording

One of the above posts also states that this recorder will not record at above 8x speeds -- sigh. i, too, have like a stack of 100 16x DVDs. Not good, but at today's prices we just gotta go out and see if we can find the slower one.

Have a great day! :)

I cant record

I posted this in another person's question but it is probably relevant to you as well. This model (which I own myself) is outdated and needs a firmware upgrade. You might get lucky and get one from their tech support. However, I heard they stopped shipping them nearly a year ago. As it stands your recorder can only use DVD-R that records at 4x (or lower) and DVD-RW that records at 1x. Any other media is useless. Since 4x media is outdated, it may be hard to find at a major retailer. Let me know if you have any luck fixing this or finding working DVDs as I have had the same issue myself. I simply cannot find 4x DVDs in the store.

Problems recording DVD-R 16X

Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.
