Toshiba laptop keyboard keeps freezing up

Plug in a USB mouse and keyboard if the problem continues, then it's a bad install or bad motherboard. If the external keyboard is fine, then it's usually a palm rest or keyboard connection problem. If this model has a nub button in the center of the keyboard, these are often problematic and can be easily removed.

As I remember it, the EX 100 was plug and play on my XP PC. The batteries are NOT a problem - as they check OK. I periodically have both mouse and keyboard FREEZE After restarting XP computer everything...

Connect an additional wired keyboard to your pc. And when the freeze happens check if the pc responds at all, using the wired keyboard. If its not responding , its an indication of a faulty PSU or motherboard.

Can't access laptop computer in safe mode, keyboard freeze up

Try booting your system from a LIVE cd like linux, a verson of Hiren's tools, or the UBCD (ultimate boot disc for windows). If your keyboard still freezes with the alternate OS, you may have a hardware malfunction.

Computer Freezes unless pressure applied

With the laptop turned off, take out the hard drive completely from the laptop and then reseat it back into its slot and make sure its nice and snug.

Then go ahead and turn it on and see it will run without freezing on you and having to apply pressure on the keyboard.

If that doesn't work then disconnect the keyboard and see if it will run smoothly without the keyboard. If it does then you might have a stuck key on the keyboard that is making the unit freeze so you might have to replace the keyboard.

Keyboard Problems

This is the common fault with usb keyboard and mice, on certain motherboards, as the driver has to load first on the system on boot up but tends to to load later, than the bios recognising your keyboard, making the sytem freeze as it tends to look for the keyboard first. There is no real solution to this as it is all down to what is called interupt request (IRQ). If your keyboard is set by windows as IRQ2, then it is the second peice of hardware to be started, so ideally it needs be IRQ1 to startup first. Experiment using different usb ports as one may have the IRQ1 and not cause the freeze. Sorry this is a bit technical but, theres no easy way to explain.
