It maybe a brake senor (ABS) wire for that wheel. Do you have an ABS light on the dash lit up?

How to change 4x4 actuators on a 1995 chevy k1500 truck. I've located 1 out of 2 actuators but the second one appears to be in the transfer case maybe? HELP


I had this problem in the middle of nowhere. On the passenger side of the front differential, there is a "thermal Actuator" that screws into the diff. This is what engages the front axle. I replaced mine and 4 wheel works again. Don't know about a second. Be sure to remove the wire connector before removal or your wiring connector.

Hello, I have a 1992 Chevy K1500 pickup, 5 speed, 4WD. I just replaced thermal 4WD actuator for the front axle with the new motor type and with a new wiring harness. Always goes into 4WD right away now....


Sounds like you have the actuator switch set to tight. You might want to try to adjust the switch so it has a little room between the switch and the shifter. Hope this helps.

I have a 93 chevy z71. I can't get the auto locking hubs to lock. My transfer chase works. But when i try to shift it into 4hi or 4low the 4x4 fuse in the fuse box will blow


The actuator down on the front axle is probably stuck, or shorted internally. You can prove this by unplugging the actuator (it's down by the diff. on the front axle) then try a new fuse and see if it still blows, there is a short in the wiring, if not it is the actuator causing the short.

Check your wire harness to your front axle actuator. The front actuator is electrical and common for the wire harness or the actuator it self will go bad and will need to be replaced. You can pick up a new actuator at Napa and GM has a new updated front axle actuator which is more reliable then the oil one that is used in your K1500. http://www.4x4posi-lok.com/PDFs/TSG_chevyK.pdf

On the full size, the front actuator is electric, not vacuum.

When in 4wd mode, a switch on top of the transfer case conducts 12 volts out to the actuator. Wire #50 (brown) is the 12v feed, and it conducts to the light blue wire (#900) to the actuator.
When shifted out of 4wd, the switch opens up and no voltage goes to the actuator.

I'll assume it is the actuator, if the plug to the actuator is getting 12 volts when in 4wd.
The way this actuator works, is it is a sealed chamber that gets heated by voltage. When it heats, the pin in the end swells and pushes a shift fork in the front differential. The shift fork engages a spline on the passenger side of the differential, and boom! you have 4WD.

GM offered an upgrade to this actuator that is a motor instead of a heated device. However, it requires a small harness addition, a spacer, and a new actuator. It is about a $150 to $200 option.

Good luck. The actuator is usually the problem 90% of time but recheck all of the wire harness just to maker sure there is no short before replacing any parts. The actuator may not be fully engaged or disengaged and the fork to the spline may be what is causing the whining or grinding noise you hear.

The 4x4 do not engage on my 1990 chevy pick up what do i need to check first

I have a 2002 Chevy Tahoe making a grinding noise in the front drivers side wheel, what could this possibly be?


If 4wd Tahoe, it is the CV joint going out or is out, replace part about 250 bucks, very common in 4wd Tahoe

If I were you, I would buy a new heated actuator. They are available at most auto parts stores, and are about $90. They are also on eBay for about $55 plus shipping. These are very easy to change - just thread out the old one, and thread in a new one.

check all wire conections also replace the actuator on the front axle but check for power there first if you have power replace that switch as well .
