How do I get the cover off to get to the hard drive on a Compaq presario 5000 series? I can slide the side cover off but can't get the front cover off to get to the hard drive so I can take it out.

It is very easy actually, Make sure to remove the controller(circuit board) and then just unscrew the tiny screws that may be hard to find. The cover will come right off.

I need the cover off so i can install a cdrw and i need to change hard drives, there seems to be two screws on the back an the rest are rivets so how do i get the shell off to get to these areas, all the...

The Compaq desktops use the same basic case. Before opening the case, disconnect all of the cables attached to the back or front of the computer. Remove the two screws that hold the side panel, then slide the panel towards the back of the computer to remove it. Press in on the tabs that hold the front panel (they are on the sides of the front panel) and rotate the front panel away from the computer to remove it. Remove the other side panel if needed (most models do not need this).

Then disconnect the power and data cables from the old optical drive if one is present. Remove the screws holding the drive into the case (or rotate or press in the slides for a tool-free case) and slide the drive foward. Then slide your new drive in and secure it with the screws. (Remove the insert if there was no drive in the bay.) Attach the data and power cables. Then close up the computer, connect the cables and power up the machine. If the drive is seen, the drivers need to be loaded (Windows may do this automatically). If it isn't, reopen the case and make sure the cables are fully connected both to the motherboard and the drive. (With IDE drives, it is possible to connect the cable to the drive 180 degrees out of position. Try turning the cable connector over.)

I hope this helps.

How do I remove the CD/DVD drive from this computer? The layout inside is different from many desktops.

just pop off the colored plate and the clips are on the side. the drive will slide right out.
(1) take off the left side cover, (2) near the front, at the bottom of the internal drive cage is a plastic lever, flip it down, (3) now open the front plastic CD holder cover (the bottom gray plastic thing), (4) there are two finger holes at the bottom of the top plastic cover - pull the top cover loose (note if you're scared to put a lot of pressure on it, you can use a small flat screwdriver through those holes to lift back the two tabs holding the cover on), (5) with the top cover off, pinch in the two plastic tabs on the side of the drive you want and pull it forward (note disconnect the IDE cable (and audio if there is one) before pulling the drive too far out), (6) pull off the two side rails from the old drive (they just push in and pull out) - but note which rail comes off which side (I'm not sure if they can be inserted upside down or not, so just keep track of which one goes on which side), (7) push the side rails onto the new drive (note you have to really push hard on the metal part of the rail to seat it properly - you'll know it's not seated if the drive doesn't slip in easily), (8) slip in the new drive & connect the IDE and power (and audio if there is one)cables (9) install the top plastic frame, flip up the lock inside the case, then close the bottom CD cover thing, (10) enjoy the new drive. hope this helps you and please vote for me

Hooking up USB adaptor to internal hard drive on desktop

clsoe the cover.
look outside of the box. look at the rear of the machine. there should be 2 USB slots. there is none in the front of the machine.
The USB driver may not be correct, since it is PIII machine. go to HP.com and download the USB driver for the machine.

I need to replace my ide drive on my compaq presario 5000 but i cant seem to locate it could you help me out?

HI,

ON the 5000 series there are two possibly three ide drives on the machine. Once you have the front bezel off, and the remove the side panel, you will find near the top of the machine the ide cdrom drive, and possible another cdrom or tape backup ide drive. Below those one or two drives is your hard drive (ide). To remove them, you will need to unplug the power cable, which is the white plastic plug with the multiple color wires going into it. Then remove the grey wide cable which is your ide cable. Do not remove the other end of the cable from the motherboard. Remove which every ide drive you want to replace and install the new one, and be sure to hook up the ide cable and power supply back into the same positions as before.

Thanks

Mark

Replace CD-Rom Drive

solution: open front blue magnetic case door, look on either side of the power button, there are finger holes in the other blue cover.
lift out from bottom to top. this cover comes off, not the whole
case. inside find tabs next to cd drive, squeeze and pull out. note: the side sliders were they come out, they will come off the
cd drive when removed. it is easier to replace the top drive by removing the bottom drive, put in the top half way, then put bottom back in half way and slide them in together.

voice of experience. hope this helps
