Hi Ali

The problem by doing this is that not all Parallel to USB cables work right out of the box with your equipment.

What you need to do first is make sure that your computer sees the device through the cable. Then when it prompts you for the drivers for the printer install the driver set (parallel) the connection should not matter at this point. However the step of the computer detecting the device first is very important.

I hope this helped.

Hi - thank Solve IT. You could be correct that the computer cannot see the printer. I am using a Manhattan brand USB to Parallel Converter cable (317474 model). Upon plugging it into the USB the computer did detect it and install it. When I then connected the parallel connection to the printer and switched it on, there were no further notifications. How can I get the computer to see the printer? (I had uninstalled the drivers so to give it all a fresh start). I am running Windows 7

Okay that makes things a little easier, now that you have the port installed you can install the printer driver manually. So what you do is run the epson installer from the driver package and make sure the drivers are in the system. Then what you do is install the printer manually and assign the new USB/Parallel Port as the port to use. Then your printer should be setup and running.

I downloaded APD_455dEWM. I when through the installation process. I was confronted with a screen which had Select Driver, Printer and Port Type. For the first two options I put in the printer model. For the final option, the only options available were to create a new Ethernet port or create a new USB port. I went with the latter. When I attempt to Print Test Page in the printer properties, it does send to the spooler, but it doesn't print. The page is lsted as a print job, but doesn't progress more. I went through the Printer Troubleshooter which suggested that I share the printer with the 'Homegroup'. No change either. When I look at the print queue, I cab see the 4 test pages that I had sent. For one of them, the status is printing, and the port is 'ESDPRT001'. The others do not have this status or a port identified. Still scratching my head...

Okay you are on the right track. Now that you have the driver installed you should be able to see in your ports Virtual Printer Port USB001. This is your port you want to use. Once you select that it will/should allow you to print. Just to clarify does your printer have actually a network port?

I should add that this menu is under the Printer Properties, sorry completely forgot to mention this.

Thank you very much for this. It is very much appreciated. I went to Devices and Printers, right-clicked the Epson printer, selected Printer Properties, selected the Ports tab and then checked the USB001 Virtual Printer port for USB. I clicked OK and it started to print. Success, of sorts. I got this printout, which at first sounds great: "If you can read this information, you have correctly installed your EPSON TM-U220 ReceiptE4 on COMPUTADORA-PC". It goes on to state "Port name(s): ESDPRT001" which is not the Virtual Printer. It printed two out, and while the 1st print out had a blank Share name, the 2nd said "EPSON TM-U220". I paused and then cancelled the printout and now I can't print again. I have restarted the printer and computer. Oddly, I can no longer 'Feed' the paper or print a test page (by holding feed and turning the power on). And I can't print again either. This printer is about to get a quick lesson in flying...

So, when I have the ESDPRT001 port checked, I can send a test page to the printer. However, it will only print out that page after I alter the printer to USB001 Virtual printer port for USB. Am I missing a driver? There is a utility called TMUSB Identifier Utility. Should I run that?

Hi Ali, you got it. The USB001 you leave checked as this is the "converter cable" port to the printer which will always allow you to print from that port the other port you can ignore as this is what the Epson software sets up.If the printer prints that way you have officially setup your Epson Label printer. Congratulations.

I just wanted to add the share name has to do with the homegroup setup. Now the issue you ran into with the printer not clearing its cache is a little different and that is the pain when it comes to using those devices with converter cables (i had similar issues with the HP4000 you saw in the image). What you need to do is turn the printer off and restart the computer as well. Then when you restart you go into the printer queue and clear the queue. After that you can turn the printer off. Software can be a pain in the neck in this case.

SOURCE: Connecting Epson TM U220D printer with Laptop (having Windows XP)

If you have the Cables2GO USB to Parallel converter, it is a pain to get working.  Go to Radio Shack and buy the GigaWire USB to Parallel.
Then once plugged in, go the printer that will be using the converter.  Go to the printer properties, select the PORTS tab.  Select the 'VIRTUAL PRINTER PORT FOR USB'.  That worked for me!

The Epson works fairly well with XP. It is to be connected to
a parallel port, usually LPT1
using an IEEE certified parallel printer cable. The computer BIOS
setting is best set for standard parallel port, SPP, bi-directional port
or similar. If possible, do not set it to ECP or EPP or ECP & EPP.

The only native driver for the printer is on the Windows CP CD. Install
using the Add Printer wizard.

The Epson LQ-860 drivers, and a few others, can be used. Using these
drivers, you will discover that the printer actually has some resident
fonts (in printer ROM) that are not accessible from the Stylus
driver. However, with this driver, graphics printing quality is
compromised.

Windows 9x drivers _cannot be used_.

Let us know.

Epson TM-U220D Printer Status

Hi, On the PC that will not display printer status correctly, pls run MSCONFIG (start, run, type "msconfig", OK); in the System Configuration Utility Window, click on the tab Startup, see if the EPSON Status Monitor is present and checked. If it is not present, check if you have Lavasoft Ad-Watch or similar program running. This prevents the EPSON Status Monitor from registering and running correctly. If such a program is running, temporarily remove Automatic setting and reinstall the EPSON Status Monitor. Accept any registry modification at this point. Restore all settings once installation is finished. If still a no go, try wiggling the parallel connector a bit and make sure it is snug and fit. If all else fails, you may have to consider: Installing to only 1 PC, share and make it a print server assuming you have networked all your PCs; or re-installing Windows (Ouch!) Hope things work out for you. Pls post again how things turn up. Kind regards.
