Can upconversion really convert 480i to 1080p

Regarding the Sony DG920 Home Theater 7.1 Receiver, specs say it will do upconversion to 1080p from any video source. Does that include 480i coming from standard TV via cable box, the signal coming from a VCR, or standard dvd?

Your opinion is the opposite of the other "expert". Based on your conclusion, the specs that Sony provides are not true. They imply any source (cable box, vcr, dvd, ldp) can be upconverted within the unit and output via HDMI to the TV. From that I would think the conversion takes place in the unit but I'm not sure. That's why I'm asking. I don't want to spend $500 for a unit and it doesn't do what Sony implys.

Hi,
Sony claims that STR-DG920 is equipped with conversion / up scaling of video signal to get output from HDMI or Component Video.
You can check this video up scaling function in nearest Sony Store as this unit would be on display / demonstration.
Click Sony Support to download user manual copy to get to know more details on page-31
Thanks.

This would be unlikely. The upconversion usually takes effect if connected via the HDMI cable. So if you're connected with HDMI and getting 720p from the source, it can upconvert it to 1080p. But if you're getting images from a source other than HDMI, it will display as the source without the upconversion.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Yes it will convert anything to 1080p the end result will be effected on the quality of the source.
Yes I believe it does include 480i, cable box, vcr and dvd players.

I keep gettin "no TV Signal" on my Emerson EWL20S5C when i plug in a indoor tv antenna. DoI need a converter box. I live very close to tv towers. HD

I cannot seem to find info on the version "C" model, but everything I find on the base model appears that is is not a digital unit and does not have a digital tuner. Thus it would need a converter box to tune digital HD channels. That said, the specs also say that the set can handle 480p/480i/1080i inputs. Thee is no mention of 720p/720i/1080p capability, which funnily enough, most US TV HD broadcasts are in 720p or 1080p. You may find you need a new set.

My Sony STR-DG920 shuts off then comes back on by itself every 4-5 minutes. It very quickly loses power then comes back online. Any ideas what might be the problem?

The problem is the Power Switch. The switch on the STRDGF920 is very problematic. When the receiver is on very lightly move around the power switch with your finger. do not use enough pressure to turn the unit off. Just very lightly slide your finger over the switch and you will see your problem happen. I have two STRDG920 units with the same problem. One is so sensitive I can blow on the switch and it will power cycle off and on. I have called Sony and they said they do not offer a replacement part power switch. I will have to figure something out.

I have a Yamaha HTR-5440 receiver and I want to connect it to my Directtv Plus HD DVR satilite receiver what do I need

If your yamaha receiver has Hdmi upconversion and HDMI pass through you should only need an HDMI cable. One from the directv receiver to the Yamaha Receiver and another from the yamaha receiver to the tv. If it does not have HDMI then you'll need component video cables and 1 optical cable.

I have a new Sony Bravia KDL-26L-5000 with Directv and the image is pixelated. Can I do anything?

Make sure you have subscribed to a HDTV service with your television provider.

Also, make sure that all of the devices that are connected to your television are HD devices, connected with a HDMI cable, not a coaxial or RCA jack.

HDTVs aren't magical TVs : everything from the source to the television, including your home theater and PVR, if any, must be HD-compatible in order for the picture on your screen to be in high definition.

On BRAVIA screens, I know that, when you select an input, it will briefly show the definition of the source in the corner of the screen. You must make sure it's 1080p. If it's anything other than 1080p, your picture is not in HD.

I remember that my grandparents had a similar problem. It turns out their BRAVIA television was displaying a low quality picture (480i), even though they had subscribed to a HDTV service, just because their satellite receiver was not configured correctly.

So maybe the solution is simply to make sure that each of your devices is configured to display only the highest resolution available (usually 1080p) in order to enjoy the best picture quality. Do not trust "automatic" quality settings, because they tend to select lower quality settings (such as 720p, which is not True HD), when they might be able to display true high definition pictures (1080p).

480i is displayed on the tv even when I play my Sony BluRay

You have to go into the blueray player menu and select the type of output. And, yes the display on the TV will automatically indicate the type signal it receives from the source.

Sony KF50we60 hdmi-dvi sound cuts when plugging into a ht-sf2300

DVI = HDMI without the audio connectors. So basically you need to connect your audio in some different way, PS3s allow you to keep your video signal as HDMI and change the Audio signal to component, so that is one way or doing it, not sure if the blue ray players allow you to do this though.

If it is me and I am spending that kind of money, it is going to be sick, os here is sick. 7.1 dolby surround and 1080P HDMI, 135W per channel, and right now if you go to FRYS.com, it is normally $500.00 bt for right now it is only $449.00. But if you put this in, be prepared to buy a PS/3 as your next investment (Th best way to get Blu-RaY at an affordable price, plus many other features) and an upconvert DVD layer, which is only about $100.00 or less today. Then you better get ready to hear from your neighbors and the cops, because they are going to think a war has broken out in your place. Enjoy, I play movies that the sound is just so realistic, I hate to leave the house anymore. Also, remember, speaker placement is key, so know the optimal environment for your system and if you need one, I may be able to hook you up with a system room tuning DVD for next to nothing. This will allow you to setup your system and place your speakers optimally for your environment. good Luck.
