Maxtor Basics 320 GB external harddrive cant be recognized

I bought a Maxtor Basics 320 GB external harddrive from a small electronics resale shop and when I plug it into my computer it says that it cant be recognized. I have tested it in all my USB ports and it always says the same, but when it was sold to me, they showed me on their computer that it could be opened and both my computer and theirs had windows xp

When I check the Disk Drives it just says Disc 0, CD Rom 0 and CD Rom 1, which I assume is just Drive C, Cd drive and cd burner, no HD. When I tried to diagnose the problem it just says there arent any controls installed for the Hardware. I dont think I know what that means...

Its not the cable bc Ive tried it on other computers and it showed up with no problem.

Also I tried the fixit patch and it didnt work either.

have you tried a different USB Cable?

Right click on my computer - go to manage - click on Disk Management do you see the drive there?? Sometimes you have to make windows recognize it. Check and see what dive letters you have there. Assuming C:\ is your data system drive and D:\ will be your CD.. what else do you have listed.

There's a good chance the shop you bought the drive from didn't have SP3 installed. For some reason, SP3 has an issue with USB peripheral devices. Windows has created a patch to rectify the problem. Click on the link below and install the "Fixit" patch to enable your PC to recognize your HD. Best of luck.

Try to right click on Disk 0 and under system tools, run chkdsk. You will need to reboot to run the utility. After, see if you can assign a drive letter (C) to the drive.

I am unsure if you are trying to take a currently external drive and mount it internally, or if you are trying to make an internal drive into an external. Please clarify.

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Unrecognized external HDD

This message usually indicates one of two things:

1 - The driver for the device is not loaded or has become corrupted (I trust that one of the other troubleshooting steps you took included reinstalling the drivers...) or more likely,

2 - The device has malfunctioned. More likely than not, the hard drive itself is OK, only the electronics in the case has failed.

If the device is still under warranty, give Maxtor Customer Service a call and get it replaced. Of course all of the data you have will be gone unless you can convince them to send you ONLY the replacement case and electronics, not the hard drive. In which case you will have to open the old case, remove the hard drive and put it into the new case.

I need to know the power rating for a Maxtor 160GB external Hard Drive for use with a Yamaha PSRs-900 keyboard. Yamaha requires the rating to be not greater than 500-600mA

The Maxtor STM901601EHD301-RK is part of the Maxtor Basics Portable family.

It uses a 2.5 inch Internal harddrive inside. (2 and a half inches across the Width. Same size used for a laptop. Desktop's use 3.5)

It connects with a USB Style A male plug, via the USB cable.
It's has a 160GB storage capacity, has an 8MB Buffer, (Cache), and an External Data Transfer Rate of 60 MegaBytes per Second.

Other than that, I find no more information from Seagate, (Seagate bought out Maxtor, and has the data base for Maxtor products)

http://hddlist.com/maxtor/all/maxtor_basics_portable

What I do know in reference to your question.
I know that the USB 2.0 technology uses 5 Volts DC. The Positive pin on the USB plug will support up to 5 Volts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USB.svg

[Viewing a USB-A style plug, view it with the white plastic spacer at the bottom. Open part at top. The Positive pin is all the way to the right. The Negative pin all the way to the left. The Data + pin is on the left next to the Negative pin. The Data - pin is on the right, next to the Positive pin]

The Maximum current draw is 500 mA for a USB 2.0 port.
[ Current is rated in Amperes, or Amp's. You are looking at Millionths of an Amp.
Milliamp, or abbreviated as mA]

This would lead me to believe that the Maxtor Basics Portable external harddrives will not use more than 500 Milliamp's.

However I do not feel comfortable, telling you that it is okay to use your Maxtor STM901601EHD301-RK, on your Yamaha PSR2-900 keyboard. Would hate to be mistaken, and have you burn out the finals of your keyboard.

I do feel comfortable with the following suggestion.

What about transferring as much data as you can from the Maxtor Basics Portable, to a USB thumb drive? They have large thumb drives now, and hold a lot of data.

Most programs will fit on a large USB thumb drive.
Or am I missing the point somewhere?
