Dell Inspiron 1501 won't power on

Hi, ok, so I'm having a problem with my Dell laptop. It's been running pretty hot lately and I've made the mistake of leaving it on overnight (I know, I'm an idiot). Anyway, I woke up this morning to it doing next to nothing. When you press the power on button, it acts as though it's about to start up, but then gets quiet...nothing appears on the screen and the only signs of life are the power light being on, the caps lock light being on, and the scroll lock button light flashing constantly. I'm wondering if the overheating just blew out the fan or battery or something. Any ideas on what went wrong/how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

To reedm79: Do you know where on their site I can confirm if my laptop was recalled? I've tried searching the site for recall info but haven't found any yet.

To sllano2845: is the logic board the same as the system board? Unfortunately, my warranty ran out in December, so I've just been hoping nothing would go wrong with it for the time being. If it's something that will cost a lot to replace, I would prob just be better off to try to get a new laptop (if I can afford it). My biggest concern though is that I haven't backed up my files in about 2 months, and if I can't get the power turned back on, will I be able to re-gain access to my files so that I can save them and put them on a new laptop?

Just tried calling Dell to find out about the recall thing but they said my model hasn't been recalled at all. Unfortunately, since they're complete bloodsuckers, they won't answer a single technical question without trying to charge me $50 (since my warranty ran out in December), so I can't even get them to give me an idea of what's wrong with it. I hate technology.

You are not an idiot at all for that.. If my memory has not completely lost me - I think Dell recalled this model. Check on the dell site with your service tag (on the bottem of the machine) and see if you machine needs to be replaced. Dell will do it for free.

    Let me know

I would Go out to the dell site again and choose the chat option. Put in your service tag and ask the rep that comes on the line. If I was 100% wrong - the rep will be able to give you part numbers for the parts that need to be replaced.

I really think though - this was a recall

Sounds like you have a defective logic board now, if dell doesn't want to replace it under warranty, there are laptop repair places that do it, but you have to have to weigh your options with buying a new laptop, repair could be up to 50% of what your's is worth as a 2nd hand laptop. if you're extremely tech savy you can try to do the replacement yourself, there are guides if you use search engines i'm sure something will show up for this or a similar model, mobo will be on ebay.

I would remove the hinge / power button cover again and make sure the little pip that presses the button down it not broken, also check the little circuit board with the switch on to make sure it's not disconnected.
Try switching on with the cover removed.

I formatted my dell inspiron 1501 and returned it to factory new, but in a word processing program the type is slow to appear, almost like it's running in slow motion. It eventually appears, but it is...

OK if you returned to factory specs go to power settings switch from default to performance this eats more power but every program runs faster!!
i hope this helps you let me no.

Dell Inspiron 1501 won't power on

Leaving a laptop on to the point of it overheating can spell death for it. Laptops, unlike a desktop computer, run much hotter. Desktops can be left on for long periods of time, if they have good air flow, not so for laptops. They suffer from limited airflow, and all the internal components are crammed into a tiny place with all the electronics running constantly, the heat build up can be deadly. You may have burned out the CPU , the motherboard, hard drive etc. The lights that are coming on are just showing you that you are getting power to them, but it doesn't sound have 2 choices, send it in for repairs, or go out and buy a new one. And don't leave it on like before, unless you enjoy burning it up.

Dell 1501 machine cuts out on fullscreen video

I work on alot of Dell's and computers in general and it's been my experience that when a laptop heats up to the point of not being able to touch it, then the CPU fan has failed. Dell has been pretty good about replacement defective parts, expecially in warranty but they've replaced alot of my customers parts out of warranty.
