Black misregistration / black density non-uniformity / black ghosting

Black misregistration:
When printing a pattern (such as the service mode grid pattern 06) the black portion of the image misregisters toward the trailing edge of the paper - usually gradually increasing in misregistration, but also increasing and decreasing misregistration. Have tried following the service manual recommendations for "color displacement" but so far no improvement has been achieved.

Black density non-uniformity:
When printing an image such as a horizontal bar pattern, the black density is lower on one side. I have tried adding more toner and stirring several times.

Black "Ghosting":
When printing image features that are more dense the leading edge has a "ghost" image approx. 1/16" - 1/8" ahead of the image. Have tried following the service manual recommendations for "stray toner" but so far no improvement has been achieved.

Please let me know what things may be causing these problems and how to fix them.

    It seems to me that mis-registration of one color to the other can only happen on the photosensitive drum or on the transfer drum. By the time an image has made it to the fuser, color -to-color registration can no longer be influenced.

This is for a Ricoh copier. You did not indicate machine.

The LD unit home position sensor does not detect an on condition while changing the LD unit position for correcting the LD position or changing the DPI.

5.4.3 LASER BEAM PITCH ADJUSTMENT
There are two laser beam pitch adjustment procedures: one for 400 dpi, and one
for 600 dpi. These adjustments use the following SP modes.
· SP2-109-1: Laser Beam Pitch Adjustment - 400 dpi
· SP2-109-2: Laser Beam Pitch Adjustment - 600 dpi
· SP2-109-3: Laser Beam Pitch Initial Setting - 400 dpi
· SP2-109-4: Laser Beam Pitch Initial Setting - 600 dpi
· SP2-902-2, no.12: IPU Test Pattern - Cross Stitch - 400 dpi
· SP2-902-2, no.13: IPU Test Pattern - Cross Stitch - 600 dpi

1. Perform SP2-109-8 (Beam Pitch Data Reset).

2. Input the value for 400 dpi that is printed on the LD unit into SP2-109-1.
Use the value printed after "P" on the new LD unit as shown below.
NOTE: Do not use values printed after a "V".

(These value numbers are on a sticker inside the machine with a UPC code on it. The numbers are just under the UPC barcode. And example number looks like this: "15980300151P: 120, 172", so the example 400 dpi value here is "120".)

3. Press the "Enter" key.

4. Perform SP2-109-3.

5. Print the 400-dpi test pattern onto A3 (11"x17") paper using SP2-902-2 no.12
(cross stitch). (See Service Tables - Test Pattern Printing - Section 4.2.3, pasted below.)

6. Write the value of SP2-109-1 on the test pattern which was input at step 2.

7. Change the value of SP2-109-1 and print another test pattern, repeating steps
2 to 5. Print about 5 patterns with different values for SP2-109-1 (e.g. "48", "96",
"192", "240").

8. Check this test pattern. If the laser beam pitch is not correct, the image looks
like a black vertical stripe pattern.
NOTE: If the laser beam pitch is correct, the vertical stripe is not so noticeable.
If the value is not correct, the vertical stripe pattern is darker.

9. Adjust the laser beam pitch position until the thin lines are of uniform thickness
(no striping effect should appear on the printout), doing steps 2, 3, and 4. (In
step 2, input a value which is estimated to be correct, then do steps 3 and 4,
then if necessary go back to step 2 and try another value.)

10. After adjusting the laser beam pitch for 400 dpi, adjust the laser beam pitch for
600 dpi, using the same procedure as for 400 dpi (use the SP modes for 600
dpi).

NOTE: Do not operate the machine until the test pattern is printed out completely.
Otherwise, an SC may occur.

1. Access the SP mode which contains the test pattern you need.

2. Press exit, then touch the "Copy Mode" key on the operation panel to access
the copy mode display.

3. Select the paper size.

4. Press the "Start" key to print the test pattern.

5. After checking the test pattern, exit copy mode by touching the "SP Mode" key.
Reset the test pattern to 0.

6. Exit the SP mode.

These adjusments listed in the manual require removal of a service panel and mechanical adjustment of the laser mounts, so it should be done by a qualified technician.

I have a Canon pixma mp990 Recently it has stopped printing with the larger black ink cartridge that is meant for printing text (PGI-220BK) All the other cartridges print fine I was using a non-canon...


It looks to me that your non Canon cartridge has blocked the print head. I see this all the time. Remember the compatables are not pigment based but just watered down ink so you can get it to flow through a syringe into the cartridge. This however is the classic outcome of trying to save a few pennies on an expensive bit of kit!

The black print on my Dell 1320C laser printer is very light (grey) in fact. I replaced the black toner at no avail. The other colors are fine.what can I do to soulve the problem. ...


It sound like you have either a very low toner density set, which would normally be set either through the control panel or the driver, or possibly the Dell Toner conservation system turned on. Here is Dells owners manual info on dealing with light print.
The toner cartridges may be low or need to be replaced. Confirm the amount of toner in each toner cartridge.
  1. Press [Printer Status], and then click the Status tab in the printer driver.
Ensure Non-Dell Toner is not selected in the Printer Maintenance tab in the Tool Box.
  1. Click the Tool Box button.
Set Toner Saving Mode to Off in the printer driver.
  1. Press [Printing Preferences], and then click the Advanced tab.
If you are printing on an uneven print surface, change the paper type setting in the printer driver. For example, change the plain paper to thick.
  1. Press [Printing Preferences], and then click the Paper Tray tab.
Verify that the correct print media is being used.
  1. See "Print Media Sizes and Support".
Ensure that eight yellow ribbons are correctly removed from the PHD (Print Head Device) unit.
  1. See "Replacing the PHD (Print Head Device) Unit" and "Installing the PHD Unit".
Ensure that the developer motor starts.
  1. Contact Dell.
Ensure that the dispense motor starts.
  1. Contact Dell.
When you are printing many images with low density, do the Toner Refresh Mode.
  1. Click the Tool Box button.
  2. Press the Start button to check the density of colors.
  3. If the print is too light, Select Refresh Mode from the list. Press the Start(1)-(4) buttons.
CAUTION: Using the Refresh Mode consumes extra toner.
  1. After you complete the Refresh Mode, select Chart Print from the list. Press the Print with A4(3) or Print with Letter(C) button for 4 Colors Configuration Chart. "Printing" appears.

adjustment (Vg/Vdc adjustment).
• All density readings taken from the density pattern produced
on the Transfer Belt are 4.5 g/m2 (IDC Sensor
Photoreceiver output) or more during max. density
adjustment (Vg/Vdc adjustment.)

Remove and reset the Black Image Unit. If this doesn't help the Image Unit may need to be replaced.

Grid pattern on Canon MP760 test print is patchy and cleaning process does not fix it.


You can try to remove the print head and ink cartridges.
Soak the head in an ammonia10-20% solution with warm water for 30-45 min.
Dry the head completely and re-install.Now run your grid patter,
It sonds like(from the grid reference)that only the black is clogging.This is a pigmented ink and tend to dry if not used for months at a time.

Printer will not print in Black ink cartridg are full. what gives


Both blacks are in your print driver test pattern?
Go into the maintence menu and choose nozzle check.
It should rint a test pattern with the first grid being labled "PGB" if not your head is clogged.You can tru a solution of 20-25% ammonia to water and soak the black print head for a half an hour.Then completely dry the electrical contacts and re-install.
If that does not do it I have a more aggressive solution that requires a baster.

OKI c5100 Printing GREY instead of BLACK.


Not able to print a status page. Tried holding down menu 5 sec and no output. I searched the menu and am not able to find how to print status page. I did print out a demo page and the black is great but when i print out text (like the entire menu map) the black is grey. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.
