Question about Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Silver Edition Graphic Calculator

I keep getting a decimal number, how do I convert it to degrees? My problem is inverse of sin 42/57.

Make sure the calculator is set to degrees. Press MODE and ensure that "DEGREE" is highlighted on the third line. Press 2ND QUIT to get out of the mode screen.

To calculate the inverse sine of 42/57, press

2ND SIN^-1 4 2 / 5 7 ENTER

The arcsine of 42/57 is about 47.46 degrees.

If you are trying to calculate arcsine (sin^-1) and arccosine (cos^-1) the only whole number you can use are -1,0 and 1. **This due to the fact that the domain of these functions is the closed interval [-1,1]. **Any value outside that interval will trigger an error message. No limitation on the argument of the arc tangent or arc cotangent functions

If the angle unit is set to degree the arc will be in degrees, and if angle unit is radian, the arc will be in radians.

When you calculate the sine cosine and tangent, the results you get are pure numbers: They have no dimensions or units because sin cos and tan are ratios of lengths.

However if you are calculating inverse trigonometric functions the results are angles, and they have units.

Use the mode key to set the angle unit to degree. after you calculate the inverse trigonometric functions, your results will be expressed in the angle unit you set in the configuration. If angle unit is degree you will get decimal degrees. To convert to DMS, use the key to the right of the change sign key (-). It is marked with degree symbol followed by what looks like a a double quote and a single quote.

The problem is not finding the sine of the angle but expressing the angle in Degree Minutes Seconds instead of decimal degrees.

This procedure will give you the sine regardless of the angle unit the calculator is configured for.

- In RUN screen press [SIN] function key
- Press [OPTN]
- Press [F6] to get to next page of menus.
- Press [F5:Angl]
- Enter 45 and press [F4: degree ' "]
- Enter 20 and press [F4: degree ' "]
- If you have seconds to enter, type in value and press [F4:degree ' "]
- Press [EXE] to get your result.

This procedure will give you the sine regardless of the angle unit the calculator is configured for.

When using trigonometric functions (cos, sin, tan) and their inverses (arccos, arcsin, arctan) one must be aware that the result will depend on the default angle unit : radian, degree, or grad.

Apparently you are working with the degree as the angle unit, so you must configure the calculator for that unit. (See screen capture below)

You would press on the SIN key, "sin(" should come on the display, then enter the value, for example 3.5 or -1 so that the display shows

sin(3,5) or sin(-1) for example.

- The inverse trigonometric functions arcosine, arcsine, and arctangent (labeled by manufacturers as cos^-1, sin^-1, and tan^-1) should not be confused with the other trigonometric functions known as secant(x) =1/cos(x), cosecant(x)=1/sin(x) and cotangent(x) = 1/tan(x).
- To avoid errors in the use of the inverse trigonometric functions, one must be careful and set the angle unit to the one required by the problem at hand (degrees, or radians)
- To make the trigonometric functions really functions, their range is restricted.
- In this calculator arcosine (x) gives results between 0 and 180 degrees (if angle MODE is Degree) or between 0 and Pi radians (if angle MODE is Radian).
- The range of results for arcsine(x) and arctangent(x) is between -90 degrees and +90 degrees (if angle MODE Degree) or -Pi/2 and Pi/2 (if angle MODE is Radian)

inverse sine (sin^-1) gives you the angle when the opposite side length and the hypotenuse, in relation to that angle, are given. therefore, if you want to do sin^-1(x), 0<x<1 for all real triangles
ex. sin^-1(1/2) would equal 30.
if you get a decimal, then go to [Mode] and select degrees instead of radians to get angle measures instead of radians... :)

I think you may find arcsin(x) is equivalent in older nomenclature to sin^-1 (x)...ie use the "2nd" and the SIN key instead of typing arcsin.

eg. arcsin(0.5) is 30 degrees is the same as sin^-1(0.5)

The ^-1 does not mean reciprocal, but "the angle whose sin is." Here the minus one indicates a kind of inverse operation. The word arcsin indicates that same inverse.

Read the screen capture about the MODES of this calculators. DEG,RAD, and GRAD remind the user that the angle units in trigonometric function calculations and coordinate conversions are in degrees, radians or grads. They have nothing to do with the other calculations you are doing.

You can only remove DEG by changing the angle unit to RADians or GRADs. In so doing, the new unit indicator (RAD, GRAD) will be displayed instead. There is no point worrying about the angle unit indicator unless you are performing coordinate conversions or calculating trigonometric functions or the inverse trigonometric functions.

MODE 9 cancels the FIX display format: decimal are displayed with a fixed number of decimal places (set by the user). After this key sequence the decimal display format reverts to NORM(al).
