Question about Hotpoint HSS25GFP Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

HSS25GFPEWW refrigerator will not go into defrost cycle with frost forming on the back wall and both sides start to warm up from the top down. I have cleaned the condenser coil and the fan runs. If I turn the refrigerator off, the frezer fan turns on and it will defrost but, it only cools well for a few days.

Why do i have frost on the inside?

frost forms from either the door being left open,a ripped gasket, when warm and cold air meet frost forms, also if the back inside wall of the freezer is frosted up you could have a defrost problem, bad defrost thermostat, heater timer or board depending on the model number.if the warm air got in say overnight you could have a problem with the fridge not getting cold, usually the air ducts freeze up.if it's in the freezer look at the door, you might find ice on the door where the warm air was coming in and also you'll see frozen water droplets on the packages and walls

What puts the heater in defrost?

The defrost control is on the rear of refrigerator hidden behind a cover plate and part of the mother board. Click Here=> HSS25GFPEWW Compressor Components and Motherboard in that picture you will see location 801, that is the motherboard. Now click here=> GE Artica Profile Technical Information. In the first picture look to the bottom of that photo and you will see J8, J9 and J11. Turn the temperature down really warm and the compressor should stop. Then carefully (you are working with live voltage here, be careful) place a insulated jumper beteen J9 and J11. Doing this will test your defrost element and defrost thermostat. Click Here=> Service Manual Checking voltage between these two points tells you if there is an open circuit. Sounds to me you have something other than a defrost problem because of no ice buildup. You should be getting a steady flow of warm air from below refrigerator and a steady flow of frosty air from freezer. I want you to feel the top of the compressor to see if you may be Short Cycling. If short cycling you will not be able to keep your hand on top of compressor.Unplug refrigerator and examine both sides of the motherboard=> WR55X10942 Most Likely the WR51X10055 Defrost Heater is defective and should you replace it I always change the defrost thermostat=> WR50X10015 Here is the locatio of the defrost heater and defrost thermostat=> HSS25GFPEWW Freezer Section listed as 230 and 240 in that photo. This what it will look like if you remove the rear panel and there is a lack of Freon=> HERE I will be here so let me know here on Fixya or through my sites should you lose me here. I will be here to assist you as needed, Thanks Sea Breeze

I bought a maytag side by side in 2002; model # MSD2454GRQ, SN 18157432AL, REV # 18. Ice is forming at the bottom of the maytag freezer department. Overnight ice will form at about 1/8 inch and left has...

Defrost problem: 3 components. Defrost Heater. Timer (circuit board or motorized) & Thermostat.
Remove cover on the inside back wall (usually 6 screws). Note frost pattern. (bottom of evaporator coil)
Put refrigerator into defrost cycle and note the defrost heater come on, or not. (careful heater can glow red hot)... Unplug Frige and test defrost components. Replace bad component... Refrigerator should defrost every 8 hours. when the cycle slows or quits the freezer will freeze over the evaporator coil and no air flow = no cold air...

I have about 15 yr. old Sub-zero Refrigerator. Lately there are some frost forming on the wall inside it. Please help!

Try to defrost it by un-plugging it, and letting the frost melt. Also, you could try to up the temp settings inside the fridge or freezer and not have it set at the lowest setting. Try the recommended setting from the manufacturer.

Frig too warm, freezer works great, but frost on back wall

It sounds like the fridge is not going through the defrost cylce due to a faulty defrost thermostat.

Hotpoint frig, top freezer motor runs contiunally, thermostat set in middle of temp. control. side of frig stays cool all time.[does not get warm as it used to] is defrost thermostat bad or timer?

niether. is there frost on back wall of freezer? if no look behind back wall and see if there is frost on all the coils when running. if less than 80% is frosty...freon. or is there frost covering back panel..if so then defrost problem would be correct. but side would be warm so I think not.

MAYTAG MZD2766GE SIDE BY SIDE

The freezer on top unit was keeping everything up top nice and cold, but the customer began to notice things in the fresh food section getting a little to warm. When the temperature selectors were adjusted to a colder setting, it seemed to help for a day or two, but then started getting warmer again. Sounding like a defrost problem, I paid this refrigerator a visit with hairdryer in hand, and parts in the van. Frost free refrigerators use a defrost heater to periodically assist with the melting of frost that builds up on the fins of the evaporator located in the freezer section. Frost forms each time the doors are opened to the unit, and the warmer, moist air from outside gets inside and heads toward the cold surface of the evaporator. As the frost continues to collect, the air passages in and around the evaporator start to close up and begin to prevent air circulation by the evaporator fan from the freezer to the fresh food section. As the cycle continues, the temperature in and around the evaporator will be cold, but the fresh food section will get warmer because warm air is not being exchanged with the colder air from above. The defrost sections of most units will consist of the same components. Namely, the heater itself, the bi-metal terminator, and the timer or defrost control. Each one of these components need to work properly for the defrost cycle to properly keep the unit frost free. On this unit, the timer could be advanced to begin a defrost cycle, but there was no current flow to the heater. After checking all connections and doing a quick resistance check of the circuit, I determined the bi-metal terminator had failed open. These bi-metal devices are used to prevent an overheating situation in the freezer section should the heater remain on to long. Once the trip temperature is reached, the bi-metal will open up a set of electrical contacts thus opening the circuit. Then when the unit cools back down to it's reset temperature, the contacts will again close, closing the circuit for the next defrost cycle. Because this bi-metal didn't reset, the circuit remained open and no defrosting took place. After using my trusty hairdryer and warm water squirt bottle to defrost the evaporator, I wired a new defrost terminator in line with the heater. With all the frost removed, the cold air started circulating again, and now everything within the fresh food section stays properly chilled.
