Question about Alesis Sr 16 Stereo Drum Machine

1 Answer

Drum machine working ok then suddenly cut out, disconnected power supply then an acrid smell of burning came from the machine.

Has anybody heard of a similar situation or have I just been unlucky?

In my case, a -15 volt trace runs under the 1/4 inch connectors and right at the edge of the circuit board. I think slight movement of the connector wears that trace out and in my case it caused it to short to a nearby trace. I ran a 30 guage wire in its place to fix it.

I have been playing my clavinova as usual, then suddenly the power went off. We have no power cut and all plugs are okay. Help!

Do you have a red indicator light or any type of illuminated display?

check fuses\n plug, if this is ok there are a couple of internal fuses.
obvioysly make sure you disconnect the mains cable before opening the keyboard, if these are ok then unless you have technical knowledge I would seek the advice of a Yamaha repair specialist.

No Power at all. Fuse blown-Burn smell from fan area.

You did a lot of damage, and replacing the fuse and trying it has caused much more.

There will be about seven blown parts on the amp and a dozen on the power supply. To give you an idea of the extent, the WHOLESALE parts cost is roughly $50, including the main power supply switchers IGBT's which cost nearly $20 for the pair by themselves.

I have repaired several of these and the larger cousin the PMP5000. It is a lot of skilled work to repair these.

The cause is a marginal insulation between layers of the multi-layer amplifier board. Usually the rearmost amp arcs between the layers. This fries three big switching transistors followed sometimes by a metering resistor and two small surface mounted transistors. A zener diode often goes. The cancer and burned area has to be ground out with a dental drill and new wire replaces the blown circuit traces.

If you are under warranty, take the unit for replacement.

The thing that can arc the amp is if speaker leads are marginal or get pulled out while under power. Excessive volume, especially pulses at high level can break down the insulaton causing the arc and failure. The black smoke is likely from the metering resistor.

Sound cutting out

You may be having early stages of arc over in the main amp. This leads to catastrophic failure of the power amp section (usually the rearward one) and sometimes the power supply.

Facing the back of theunit, usually the left speakon connector is the one that connects to the section that fails.

The arcing is between two layers of a multi-layer board.

Note, if you smell smoke or pop a fuse DO NOT continue to use the device but get immediate servicing.

Blank display no functions power ok

Not sure what you mean by "power OK",

If you have checked that the logic circuits are getting a clean 5 volts DC THEN the power is OK. This requires an oscilloscope AND a voltmeter.

USUALLY when a display shows characters like that it means the processor hasn't initialized the display. Most common problem is too low power supply that doesn't permit the processor to come out of reset.

Bad filter caps can cause the 5 volts to dip below 4.6 volts which would be minimum to operate. A voltmeter might still register near 5 volts but a scope will show the voltage dips.

Not working@ full pwr.I just got a new power supply I plugged it in the wall , in a short time the pwr supply got hot.. is there a way to reset it?

Sounds like you got an incorrect power supply OR the SR16 has a failure creating too much load.

The power supply should be a 9VAC at 1 amp (1000 ma)

The power supply MAY get warm to the touch but should not get real hot.

Without the SR16 pluged onto the power supply it should barely get warm. If the SR16 doesn't work, then it probably has an internal failure... LIKELY the internal rectifier filter combination.

BOSS DD3 STAYS ON AND WILL NOT TURN OFF

It's supposed to do that. An extra lug on the input jack is connected to the battery and/or power supply's ground.

So the only way to power off any pedal is to disconnect the input jack. If you use a power supply and power multiple pedals you can simply disconnect the power supply to cut power and avoid unplugging each one.

Blown fuse and replaced it and burned the amp

BIG problem! You should NOT have replaced the fuse as additional damage has been done. I repaired a PMP5000 and I can tell you likely what you will find: The smoke and smell came from two power resistors that are part of the soft start circuit that now are toast. You will likely find several components in the main portion of the power supply that are toast. These will include transistors, resistors, diodes, and probably the small 8 pin switching regulator chip. There is a small power supply that comes on first which enables a relay that shorts out those soft start resistors AFTER the power amplifier BALANCES and normalizes.
The unit I repaired had severe damage due to arc-over at one power amp section. Three power transistors were destroyed there and board traces and charring had to be handled in that section.
The repaired unit had to be brought up with a light bulb in series with the line power cord to prevent further damage until all bad parts were discovered and repaired. You will need to take the unit to a shop that is expperienced with the product. The repair cost MAY be pretty high.

Alesis SR-16 distorted sounds

The distorted and low volume output plus noise is usually caused by using the wrong power supply adapter. The Alesis SR-16 takes a 9V "A/C" supply not "DC". The A/C supply provides a negative voltage swing which wouldn't exist with a DC supply. So check and make sure you have 9V A/C output supply not DC.
