Look on the underside of the platform where you screwed on the head. It should have 3 small screws in it. These are tighened and loosened with a jeweler's screwdriver. You may have one screw that is just *barely* tight, so you were able to hand tighten the head until it "locked" into place with the screw. When you loosen each of these screws a few turns the head should come off.
If you can't locate these screws, or you can't remove the head, you will need to take the tripod to a large camera store for assistance. Their rental or repair department can help you remove the head. If you need help locating a large camera store with a rental or repair department in your area, I may be able to help - I would need your location (e.g. city/state/country/zip or postal code).

SOURCE: vanguard vt438 help!!! urgent
Think you'll find its a QS29 adaptor which is used on other models. At least the one on mine is labelled QS29 and the pictures look the same. They seem to be available.

There are three small set screw (grub screws) that are under the head, net to the center column. You will have to raise the center column and look under the head. These are slotted screw heads and a small to medium screwdriver should work. You don ot have to remove the grub screws completely, but you should back them out at least half way. The head will unscrew off the center column. The gray part below the head is half the head attachment and half the center column end plate so it should separate in the middle line between the two.

Not all tripods have heads that can be removed. Without knowing which model vanguard tripod there is little anybody can do to help you.
