Question about Boating
My 2000 Mercury 40 HP outboard mortor Will not start, it spending real fast but won't start. Is there some type of troubleshooting manual that would show me, locations of each part and how to test for fire and fuel. Thank You very much. DD
Remove spark plugs and check compressions are over 100psi then put plugs back in plug caps and hold them against the head and crank over and see if they spark ! if yes then remove carb airbox cover and open the throttle fully and sqwert some fuel in the carbs try to start then with 1/4 throttle and choke on ! if starts but then dies then you need to clean the carbs and fuel pump , check diaphrams not hard !

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

If the fuel was not treated with a fuel stabilizer than you probably have a varnish build up in the carburetor. This varnish will clog fuel needle valves and jets. You need to disassemble the carb to clean the jets and needle valves. Sometimes cleaner is not enough you need to us compressed air to blow out the jets. Good luck.

Your best bet is ebay for a replacement user manual. Take a look around, you will come across one... For the meantime, gas oil ratio should be 50 parts gas to 1 part oil, i.e. 50:1. General care: Dont go full throttle for any length of time. Cruise of 3/4 throttle... Always flush engine after use in saltwater, including washing down exterior. Keep spark plugs in good order and check prop for fishing line wrapped around in near the prop hub. Otherwise, get a yearly service and have them check the water pump and replace as needed, get it tuned etc and gearbox oil changed.
