SOURCE: encoder strip

These can be difficult. Is the spring still on or do you still have it? Do you have a spring hook? If you don't, go to electronics store and use it to pop the strip back on the spring. www.tonerovernight.com

SOURCE: I displaced the encoder strip on an hp Photosmart

Typically, HPs have one fixed hook for the hole at the end and for the other end, a spring steel piece with a hook. Take a good look at the carriage; it will have a vertical slot, located toward the innermost part of it through which he strip needs to pass. Either take the strip (clean it gently while it's out), push it through the carriage while it is centered and look along its possible path for the hook arrangements. I don't know your particular printer but some of them require removal of the case to access those points. If you have a longish tweezer, you may be able to fish it into place (using a flashlight) anyhow. Be sure to fasten the spring-end first since the fixed end will not give and you risk tearing the mounting hole otherwise.

Part number cbo218007b-15

That part number is for the Optical Encoder Strip that the printer uses to tell how far the print heads have moved. I just posted a step by step guide that I hope will help you reinstall the strip in t=your printer. You can get it here.

http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/reinstalling-the-optical-encoder-strip-on-a-hp-officejet-8600-printer/

We do printer repairs in our shop and have seen this happen many times on different models of inkjet printers.

I hope this helps you.

Printer cuts off print at top of page in spite of over 1" margin and every 3rd or fourth line of print in document is very weak (not much ink)

Hello

Well are you using the external ink-system? even if you are not the disk encoder and the encoder strip needs to be cleaned. Encoder Strip is the plastic strip connecting from left to right inside the printer near the belt. In the same type of plastic there is an Disk encoder on the left side of the printer you can find it if you open the printer only.

White lines across print

If you lay the print on the exit tray face up and open the cover. Look on the encoder strip, the clear plastic strip behind the carriage, you should see an ink or grease spot right above where the bad spot on the page is. Wipe the encoder strip with Q-tip or wiper with alcohol. Prints should look better.

Prints in staggered columns

What you describe is typically caused by ink aerosol building up on the encoder strip, a thin band of plastic that the printer uses to keep track of its location.

You can gently clean the encoder strip as shown at HP's website here. Be sure to heed to cautions and notes. Do not use any solvents other than water and be gentle to avoid damaging the encoder.

Print problem

If your machines are like other 7310's and 7410's that we have serviced, the inside of it is probably coated in ink spray. Over time this spray will build up on the encoder strip and cause print image defects. You can just clean the encoder strip for a temporary fix but I would have in completely torn down to the metal frame and cleaned good. We charge $85 for this type of cleaning which cures what ails most of this line of printers.

The "plastic strip" is the position encoder of the print head, it holds itself in place by two latches, one is fixed and the other is flexible, you have to put the encoder in the flexible latch first by holding it at an angle and then in the fixed one, probably you'll have to disassemble the MFP to have access and a better view of the parts.

These can be difficult. Is the spring still on or do you still have it? Do you have a spring hook? If you don't, go to electronics store and use it to pop the strip back on the spring. www.tonerovernight.com
